Mario is passionate about macro photography too, especially his sea horses.

I've put a couple hundred hours bottom time off tekila.

For all the reasons stated above.

Cameron

P.s. A wet taxi ride makes for a great drift dive.

If you walk north to Casa del Mar and cross the street, just past the arched walkway is Casa del Mar's pier and dive shop building. On the north side of that white building there's a bar on the 2nd floor. That's Tikila. You can also order food from the Paprika menu there. Paprika is directly across the street from Tikila. Might be 5 hundred feet from the Park Royal?

There are showers and rinse facilities on the ground floor under Tikila and easy shore entry. I think Mario probably works out of there and I vaguely remember him taking walk-ups out for dives. Caught him and a cruise ship passenger just as they got out and saw fresh pictures of 7 different sea horses. This was 4 years ago. I think there are a few options for renting tanks/weights. Del Mar Aquatics is on the same side of the street as CDM and close to Tikila. Pro Dive or whoever it is at Casa del Mar (on the south side of the building where Tikila is located) would probably rent tanks.

In addition to the above described coral heads and fish structures, north of the ocean entry at Tikila there are coral formations in very shallow water (8 feet) which go as far north as I cared to go when I snorkeled there many years ago, just pre-Wilma. Since Wilma the shore diving and snorkeling have steadily recovered. Seems as though there's always something to see there. You should have a dive flag above you.

If you wanted to get in really close to the PR, cross the street and right next to Ernesto's Fajita Factory is Scuba Shack and they'll rent tanks too. We usually head north with the current, as it's never so bad we can't easily swim back to Scuba Shack, but if you had to you could exit at CDM or Tikila. There's kind of a ledge that arcs around from Scuba Shack in front of CDM and Tikila, as I recall. It's about 25 feet deep. We follow along that, it takes you to the fish structures, at some point we head towards shore and turn back.

I've done a dozen or so shore dives there, and I'm aching to do a drift dive. So, you get down to Blue Angelish territory on one tank? Would it be possible to do two tanks, like SI at Blue Angel and keep heading north? Where would you wind up if you did that, if it's possible?

Yes, there's a bunch of drift exits on the one tank and 2 tank ranges. I'll pm you.

There's decent hazards to these dives so I don't want to recommend them on the public forum.

Anyone with suitable experience feel free to drop me a note and I'll share what I've been up to.

Regards,
Cameron

Ps. These drifts are wonderfully comfortable, safe and peaceful compared to anything back home, don't get me wrong.

Mario Ceh on facebook, seahorse as the profile pic.

He runs the dive center there, busy but loves to share.

Cameron

And there's a "dive center" at Tikila now? Wow. Imo, it's a really neat place and area. Having something cool to drink around sunset at Tikila is really nice. It's been 3 years since I've been to Cozumel and 4 years since I've done a shore dive in that area. I think the fish structures were brand new and I can't wait to see what it looks like.

Thank You. One of the reasons I've never done it is being unwilling to do it without a guide. Imo, $50 or whatever to drift down the shore is a no brainer but circumstances always get in the way. Would love to do this some day.

Dive center is generous, tables for classes, equipment for rent and a couple rinse tanks is more accurate.

Thanks for the info. My wife always puts us at Park Royal, so that is really close for me. My interest is poking around for macro photo opportunities.

where do I find Mario ?

Can you recommend any other shore dives that would be good for macro work ?
Mario is great guide to dive here, can show you sea horses, bat fish, frog fish, etc. He also does boat dives to all the reefs. He is also a very good photographer. Here is a link to his facebook page Mario Ceh | Facebook

It really depends on the current how far you would get. I have gone in at La Ceiba, swum on the surface through the sailboat moorings, dropped down and gone to the wall, drifted north until 1000psi, and swum in on the bottom. I have come up as far south as south of Villablanca and as far north as the lighthouse. Just north of the lighthouse is the new big ferry pier; I don't know how safe it would be to pass through that area on a dive.

This type of dive is not for novice divers.
