For me, half the fun is the pre-vacation planning; the reading of posts, the posting of questions, looking at hotels, dive opps, trip reports, pictures; reading up on the culture, the local customs, the restaurants; the dive sites, the gear requirements, the weather, visibility, the local marine life... and getting all hyped up as preparations are made.
So, Cali, you've got 46 days of fun in your future!!

I see you quivering with anticip.....................................ation! ;^)

Fun, sure, but HALF? Nah.

Y'all know what surveyor's tape is? It's stretchy, nonadhesive thin plastic tape about an inch wide that they use to mark trees and stuff around a building site. It's available in any hardware store, really cheap, like a buck or two for a roll that's a couple hundred yards of the stuff. It comes in several "Day-Glo" colors.

I'm going to get some in the bright yellow green color (like a Cyalume lightstick), and whenever I go out on Cozumel. I will affix an unobtrusive but obvious piece of it to a belt loop or something. Anybody sees that, you'll know I am trolling for ScubaBoarders. Feel free to participate.

Just to reiterate:

I hope to see some of you guys there!

I hope this vacation really helps Rick, he seems to need some time off!!!

my photo is up to your left...never change your look that's my motto! other than that i usually stand out in a crowd, I'm 6'-4", 240ish...hard to miss. the boss is a beautiful 5'-4" petite brunette. we're pretty easy to spot.

in the water i used to be REAL easy to find, i had a ScubaPro BC that was international orange. it sprung some unfixable leaks so i just bought a new USD Passport that i'll giving the break in to on this trip. I am still using my 24 year old Conshelf XIV reg and ScubaPro Jet fins though!

staying at La Ceiba, diving with Martin. 4th thru 13th

looking forward to bumping into some of you guys while we are there. have talked to a couple of guys about getting together at Casa Denis for dinner some night but nothing has been finalized.

still looking for Cico de Mayo celebrators! I don't know if the Cedral celebration will still be going on or not I've seen both that it end on the 3rd and on the 6th, I'm hoping the 6th as we arrive on the 4th.1

From the Cozumel Insider website:

El Cedral Festival (~ April 23rd -- May 3rd)
According to a mixture of oral history and legend, during the War of the Castes a group of Mayans commanded by Cecilio Chi descended upon the village of Saban, planning to kill all of the whites and mestizos living there. Fleeing inhabitants sought refuge in the local church, however, their hiding place was soon discovered and the machete-wielding warriors took the lives of many of the villagers.

Among the wounded survivors was a young man by the name of Carimiro Cardenas who had weathered the attack with a small wooden cross clutched in his hands. Cardenas believed that the tiny crucifix had saved his life and made a firm promise that once he found safety and a new home, he would organize a yearly religious festival and that his descendants would continue the tradition.

This sacred holiday begins on April 23rd with a prayer vigil at dawn, followed by daily morning and evening novenas leading up to May 3rd. On that day, the faithful perform the solemn baile de las cabezas de cochino, which literally translates to dance of the pigs' heads. The heads are a sacrificial offering to God in that He was the first to sacrifice for his people through his suffering on the cross.

For 154 years the Holy Cross Festival has continued to be the heart of what is now a larger non-religious festival called La Feria del Cedral. Descendants of the mostly Spanish families who founded the villages of San Miguel and El Cedral continue to participate annually in the Baile de las Cabezas de Cochino, while "newcomers" enjoy a wide variety of activities, including sports and cultural events, rodeos, folkloric dancing, live music and horse racing.

While the island of Cozumel has changed greatly over the years, El Cedral Festival continues to signify 154 years of tradition that began with the promise of a grateful campesino from Saban.
