My husband is currently in Iraq and so we do not have the option of getting our OW certification here at home. So we are looking at doing it in Mexico this June.

Last year we did the one day class where we could dive to 40 ft with an instructor and fell in love. He has been in Iraq ever since :(

We will be in the Mayan Riviera and have been looking for a place to go for the certification. Last year they told us we could do it at the hotel but apparently they are not doing that anymore.

We liked Aqua World last year but the problem there is we would have to ferry over to Cozumel each day :(

Does anyone have any recommendations?

We were also looking into the possibility of an online class for the book portion. I read that a lot of people here are not fans.. but it would be nice to have that done so I could spend more time with the hubby in the time i do have with him.

Again any thoughts on this? Or sites that you would recommend?

Michelle,
I can't recommend any shops for you, but PADI and I believe NAUI both have on-line learning which done in advance could really maximize your time in Mexico. Another option, would be to stop in at any PADI shop and pick up the books for Open Water class.

By reading them in advance, and completing the Knowledge Reviews in the book, you would be well ahead of the game when you start your class. You would have minimal classroom time, and could start in-water training almost right away. Your hubby may enjoy spending any free time he has in Iraq feeling a million miles away and underwater.

Good luck,
Dennis

The only dive operation on CZM I'm familiar with is
Aldora, they may be able to help you, online @ Aldora.com......As popular as CZM is here on this board, I'm betting you'll get many more responses to these questions........good luck.....hope ya'll get it all taken care of on your limited time schedule........

PADI's elearning system isn't up and running yet. Michelle, as Dennis said, you could pick up the book or CD-ROM and do the work ahead of time. PADI requires only one CD-ROM per household, so get a copy, do the work, send it to hubby and he can do the work. Less time in classroom, more time diving.

I think she said they're going to be the Playa del Carmen, Tulum, or along there - and wanted to avoid Cozumel.

If you'll post on our main Mexico forum, you'll get a lot of suggestions...

we would like to dive in Cozumel later but it would be a lot better if the classes were closer to the hotel.

If we do the PADI cd-rom thing when we are done do we get something to take with us? Or how does the dive place we pick know we have done it? Sorry if that is a stupid question.

Michelle, check out www.scubamex.com and give them a call. You would just need to complete the knowledge reviews and take them with you. They would review any problem areas, administer the exam and do the confined and open water portions right there. There are alot of beautiful dive sites within minutes of their location. Thank your husband for us and enjoy your class.
