It’s starting early.

First off Spokane County, just west of us, had a canoe accident where a 7-year old was trapped underwater for approx. 20 minutes. He’s still alive but it’s touch and go right now.

The river is running reasonably fast and it’s cold. Sounds like Dad hit a bridge-piling broadside, which trapped the canoe and the child. Dad and another passenger swam to safety. Another case of not knowing enough to go play safely.

Then in the county to the north of us a guy crashed his car into the big lake and drowned. Don't know if he has had toooo much spud juice yet.

These are just a couple of incidents that have happened over the past couple of weeks here locally. Every time the year starts out like this we get slammed later on. Let’s pray this year is an exception.

You might want to say some prayers for the little 7-year old. It doesn’t sound good so he needs all the help he can get.

Yep, it's going to be a really busy year for you. Of course, we look forward to all the stories.

It's nice to know, however, that you are very well-paid and rewarded for your extra effort and devotion, per your last post. It is truly heart-warming to know that the County Commissioners value the work you do so much.

Gary's stories make me cringe. This one makes my heart ache. I have a 6 year old daughter and just the thought of some god-awful thing like this happening to her gives me the creeps. I'm so happy that there are people out there like Gary who are willing (and able) to do this work because I know for sure it would make me fold. Part of me doesn't want to know about the sharp end of life. I like all my fantasies to be fully of happy dancing people.

I understand. These stories are part of life, but no one could call them happy stories.

I hope your daughter will grow up happy and safe, and never have to come near anything like this.

Sometimes we who do this kind of job ask ourselves why we do it.
The answer is always: "Well, someone's got to do it!..........and sometimes we get to make a difference for others."

I had a couple of beers last night with one of his nurses. He is still very critical.

As far as dad, Who knows why? Maybe the self preservation gene's took over.

I never want to do a post like this but we do them way to often.

The little 7-year-old passed away today. I guess the little guy just couldn't fight anymore. Submerged for 20 minutes in a strong current would be rough on anyone.

I’m so flippin bitter right now.

What in the world is going through the mind of a father when he loads a child into a canoe and goes for a swift water trip with major obstructions in the river? Nothing, that’s what.

If you get arrested for DUI with a child in the car we charge the person with injury to a child. But if they have a child in a vessel it’s a simple No PFD ticket. It should be a much more serious penalty with some serious jail time and a stiff fine.

Not wearing a PFD is basically the same as getting on a motorcycle without a helmet. I’m guilty of both but not with the kids.

Parents need to set an example. If the kids need a helmet or PFD the parent or responsible adult should use one as well. There I go using that responsible word again. We wouldn’t be having sleepless nights if there were a few more responsible people out there.

Just keep putting kids on bikes without helmets, in boats without PFD’s, in cars without seatbelts, in the bed of pickup’s and don’t forget to light up a cigarette and blow the second hand smoke all over the kid.

I am fully aware of how you feel. I am a paramedic and have seen some child deaths that could have been prevented. I am sorry for the pain you are feeling and the loss of another child. Take care.
