Coughing & Sneezing.

THis is something that I have often wondered about. Has anybody had any expiriences with coughing, or sneezing underwater? I've had expiriences while sneezing on the freeway before, and we all know that that is quite dangerous. How bout during a dive, underwater?

Coughing - just keep the reg securely in your mouth and cough through it, no problem at all.

Sneezing - doesn't happen very often to me (mask seems to decrease tendency), but if it does, you'll want to rinse out your mask and clear it. Shouldn't be a big deal

I was told in my BOW that you can do anything through a reg that you can do normally.

I have coughed and sneezed both while underwater.

Coughing is not much of a problem as long as you keep the reg securely in place.

Sneezing normally requires several mask clearings after (yuck!)

I have even heard of people throwing up through a reg, but I can't say as that sounds like fun. In the event that were to happen, keep in mind that it is possible for 'stuff' to lodge in the exhaust valve, and possibly allow water back in.

If this were to happen to me, I personally think I would go to my backup reg immediately and swish and purge my primary til I was sure it was clear.

Done the "cough through the reg" thing a couple of times.

SEEN the "chum the water through the reg" thing once. And man, let me tell you, it looked STRANGE!

'Twas on a cattle boat dive and I presume the diver had mal-de-merde and didn't "clean up" from it once in the water. He wasn't very deep when he did it... I was a good ways below him at the time, but he was clearly in view.

The fish thought it was cool (!)

He aborted after the chumming stopped (I suspect I would too!)

They tell you that you can do this in class, but this was the first (and so far only) time I've actually SEEN it.

Just don't remove the reg from your mouth and MAKE SURE it stays in during the event. You'll want to go to your backup and do a really thorough rinsing when you're done, I suspect, too (yeeeccchhh!)

Coughing through a reg, no problem, just don't spit it out.

A good sneeze could dislodge a mask, something to consider.

Wait'll you hurl through that reg, what a divine scuba experience.

I've sneezed through my reg several times. it's really no problem and kind of funny at first. I've had no problems disloging my mask or even needing to clean it.
(try to direct most of the sneeze through your mouth)

these reasons along with others are why we should check the tightness of our mouthpiece and tiewrap before every dive.

Means "Sh*t sickness" and not sea sickness!! LOOOOOOOL
The correct french is "mal de mer",
mal = ill
de= of
mer = sea....., whereas merde = poo

Come on, you guys - it's the best defog in the world!

It doesn't matter if you're about to sneeze or hurl: hold your reg and mask in place (just like you were about to do a giant stride) and let loose. Once the storm has passed cleanup can start - you have plenty of water to rinse with.

I just got back from a week in Dahab marred only slightly by a chest cold. I coughed and sputtered all over the place underwater (and above as well). As everyone else has said, hold that reg in place and everything's fine.
However, on one dive, I had a prolonged and uncontrollable coughing fit. As a result, that perfect hover went right out the window and I ended up flapping around like some resort try diver.
I also noticed that I had poorer air consumption on the coughing dives.
