Going to be visiting Corolla NC and my geography of the OBX is limited. Is there any diving to be had out that way? And good recommendations for DO? Many thanks in advance!

- Sarah

Corolla is in the very northern part of the outer banks, close to VA. Your closest dive spots will be out of Nags Head.

The warmer water you read when you see NC in national publications starts in Hatteras and continues to the south (actually, the water travels S to N, but you get the idea). The water around Nags Head tends to be cooler and murkier, FWIW.

Thanks Rich.

Murky .... yuck. We get murky all the time up here in Northern California. How far is Hatteras from Corolla? Is it feasible to drive for some diving? Worth it? We'd really like to do at least 2 2-tanks while there. :)

Murkier, not just outright murky :). It's really not _that_ bad, as long as you're not expecting crystal clear blue water. Outer Banks Dive Center, Nags Head, North Carolina is a popular shop in Nags Head. They have a link to recent dive reports (temps and vis) on their main page.

Corolla to Hatteras is a good trip. It's been a while since I've done it, so google maps would be as good as my estimate. I would consider it, but I understand why some might not.

There are also some shore dives in the Nags Head area, if conditions are right. There's more on the OBX dive website (bottom of the Nags Head Wrecks page).

Go to this page: Outer Banks Dive Center, Nags Head, North Carolina
and click "wrecks" on the left hand button bar. There are beach dives in Nags Head that are nice, but I also recommend going out with them on their boat, the "Go-Between." I just got back from diving with them all weekend, and we had 66F water temps with 35-45' viz. (Jackson/U-85)
The crew was amazing, everything was great. Highly recommended. They also have a full service shop with any thing you could possibly need. Safe diving,

Did you end up going to Corolla ? I am headed there for June 2009 and was about to ask the same question you did. Looks like a long drive to Nags Head.

Hatteras has better vis. than out of Oregon Inlet but you also have to drive an extra hour just from Kill Devil Hills and that's about 35min. from where you are. Outer Banks Dive Center is closer and just fine. Those cose-in wrecks/AR's have poor vis. in low tide- something you may want to check before you book, just stop at any fishing store and pick up a tide chart for Oregon Inlet.

I'd have to drive another hour to be in the Gulf Stream blue waters off Hatteras.
