I recently found the younger brother of that HW reg (SCUBAIR) in a box of disgarded dive shop stuff the other day. I have not rebuilt it yet but I know folks who have and they say it breathes great,

Not yet, I literally just unboxed it. Will do in a bit.

Find something with maybe 1000 psi in it to hook it to. Keep your hand and face away from the pressure relief valve.

I have a couple of these, the 2nd stage diaphragms get brittle.

I’ve got an LP85 with 500psi in it, I’ll try that.

It works, no audible leaks, purge button works, work of breathing is a bit difficult.

Is it a tilt valve? I recall reading that those seconds are a "risky endeavor" being able to lock up in the closed position...

I have too a couple variants... They are currently sitting on a display in my office.

Think it was something I read on Bryan's pages on the VDH forum/information area...

I’m not sure, I’ll have to take a closer look at it.

You can easily remove the cover on the second stage by squeezing the retaining ring with a pair of pliers (I would use a Channel-lock pliers).

Then you can verify if it is a needle valve (upstream) or a down-stream demand valve.

Since there is a pressure relieve in the first stage, I am going to guess that has the needle valve.
