JimLap, thanks for the info. I have a hard time imagining being able to do valve shutdowns with the valve handles pointing straight forward, though!

I have a set of narrow steel 72 (6.9 inch) bands intended for independent ONLY use. For sale, maybe.

They don't one points forward and one points backwards! Unless you have right and left handed valves on them. Wouldn't that be fun?

Thanks for all the replies with all of the info.

I asked a few places on island about getting the plus rating on a hydro for the tanks. Ocean Concepts told me that they are only plus rated for the first five years when they come from the manufacturer which I knew was load of crap but didn't want to argue.

Another place on island I went to that has really reasonable rates for hydro/vip ($9 vip and was like $20 for vip and hydro if done together) said he doesn't do the plus ratings on hydros due to all of the points required to do the plus rating hydro test successfully. I don't know what all is required but guess I may be able to get him to do one if I were able to provide the REE numbers or other stuff as needed. Though I don't know what he needs from his equipment standpoint to do the test.

I'm planning on getting them filled to 2600-2700psi for dives so they'll be equivalent to an AL80 just a bit smaller, lighter and less bouyant empty. :D

Does anyone know where I can find the bouyancy chars for the tanks? Any chance they're floating aorund here somehwere...?

Double 72s are actually easier to dive than a single LP120 for most people who have tried both.

I'd do independent doubles before I used a "cheater bar", but the independent doubles pose the same challenge with regard to the left post being hard to reach unless you use a left handed valve.

If they are just going to be used recreationally, a single outlet manifold on a set of doubles is fine, and as noted above, double 72's feel better in the water than a large single tank like a LP 108, LP 120, 130, etc for most people.

I wouldn't mind a bit more info on bands.

My LDS is selling off 6 steel 72s cheap, and it crossed my mind to buy a pair and convert them into doubles. My initial problem was that the cheapest manifolds that I found (by miles) were XS Scuba, but nobody seems to offer bands specified for them. It never actually occurred to me that I might have to separately consider the diameter of the tanks as well. Surely there must be some standardisation of bands? It can't be that everyone orders custom?

Certainly welcome any advice/suggestions.

There are bands from Vic on eBay, very high quality and good prices, Tech and Wreck I think it is. He has bands for both vintage spacing and modern isolation spacing manifolds.

Here are a number of vintage doubles manifolds. On the right is a cheater bar.

Here are two cheater bars, the second one with the pig tail was known as a suicide bar. You just put the tanks into some bands and turned them so that they faced each other.

Check Ebay for a week or so and a vintage double post non-isolating manifold should turn up or just go get a new style (new or used) with DIN posts and an isolator. New, you shouldn't be much over $250.
