Cambodia, Vietnam, Marshall Island, Fiji, etc... Cost of living is low... They don't sue if you killed a few divers... he, he, he....

Do you have any place that I do not need to bungee an assault rifle to my tank? lol

GA Under Water is right – there is no Master Scuba Diver course as such, you just need to have Rescue, current EFR qualification, five Specialties and 50 logged dives, then you can fill in a PIC card, send off your money, and voila, you have your MSD cert card.

Not sure for other agencies, but there is a separate form that needs to be filled out for the Master Scuba Diver from PADI. Its not the pic, and you can't self certify - needs to be done by an Instructor.

I did the MSD cert level myself. At the time I was unsure what I wanted to get out of diving, and was not really looking at the Divemaster route (in those days!). I did however think that if I was going to get involved seriously in diving, then knowing something about it seemed a good idea! I liked the courses I did, and certainly learnt a lot from them. If you can self teach, then, up to you, but I liked going the structured theory/practical route. I did deep, night, nav, nitrox and wreck. In all taught by three different instructors, and so a fair bit of additional techniques etc, just from working with the different instructors.

As and aside, it did make my DM course, and later my instructors course a fair bit easier.

Other agencies don't have a MSD course that is juat a frequent buyer plan.

All classes are valuble if taken from the right instructor. When I look at a diver's certifications I want the following: OW, AOW, Rescue, Deep, Night, PPB, Navigation, and Search & Recovery. Again, those classes are worth taking if you find the right instructor. Also, you'll receive a Master patch for taking the above.

And beware others who tell you that you DON"T need education, they're not educated.

There's the rub..."the right instructor". If the class was any good, any instructor who met the standards would be teaching a good class.

We don't need any agencies involved, why?

SSI and SDI's Master Diver program are similar to PADI. SSI requires 40 dives, SDI and PADI require 50 dives for certification. I believe SSI, SDI and PADI all require certification as a Rescue diver prior to becoming a Master Diver. NAUI does not.
In fact you can become a NAUI Master Diver with just 19 dives under your weight belt (5 from OW, 6 from AOW, and 8 from MSD). That's if a NAUI instructor doesn't exceed standards and require additional dives.

So glad to see other agencies adopting frequent buyer plans. That kind of recognition is so good for the diving industry. Can NAUI, YMCA and LA County be far behind?

I thought you needed 50 logged dives? But things do change and rarely for the better. Do you still need to have both the knowledge and skill level expected of a NAUI Instructor, sans the training stuff to be certified as a NAUI Master Diver?

When I last checked you did although that was a couple years ago. You also only needed about 50 dives for Instructor at that point but I guess things do change.

So, regarless of the number of dives required, may we safely summarize by saying that a PADI, SSI or SDI Master Diver is a member of a frequent buyer club contrasted with a NAUI Master Diver who must have the diving knowledge and skill level expected of a NAUI Instructor?

Only 50 dives for NAUI instructor? PADI requires a minimum 100 dives to take the IE exams.
