I recently purchased a Nikon D5000 and am looking to purchase an Ikelite housing. I currently use a point/shoot for my underwater imaging. However, I am unsure about normal DSLR photography, which is where my confusion stems from.

Is the viewfinder somehow magnified?

One of the drawbacks of the D5000 is that the Live View mode for movies takes a long time to focus, then shoot a pic. There is no other option for LCD screen shooting...

The pics on the website are somewhat helpful, but anyone that uses an Ikelite housing can feel free to help me out on this one...

Thanks in advance!

You will find that the viewfinder is magnified. I am not sure by how much, but it is magnified. Pretty easy to see through.

You will also find that live view or shooting through the lcd is of little to no value underwater.

Finally, you will find that Ikelite's customer service is top notch, rarely equalled.

I have five housings, associated ports and strobes and love Ikelite's products.

With the new port lock system, I think they have a real winner.

After more research, I have another question...I plan on using a 18-55mm lens with the camera. I was planning on purchasing a standard dome port, but how would I rotate the focal length? Would I need a modular system instead?

If so, what parts of a modular system would I need?

Thanks again for the help...

Sounds like I'm too late but I just played with an Ikelite housing a Canon 40D in the pool last night. I was amazed at how well I could see through the viewfinder. We were using a 10-22 lens with a standard port and the zooming was flawless. Can't wait for the strobe and other lens port to come in.
