Hi all,

I apologize if this is not the right thread.

I have read many a thread where you talk about connecting a backup computer.

Currently, I have an AquaLung Titan regulator, which has 1 HP and 3 LP ports on the first stage. When I bought the regulator, I also bought the Sherwood Insight computer, along with an analog SPG. The choice of regulator and computer was based on what I thought I could afford at the time. Since I was still relatively new to diving, it also made sense to get something that was entry level.

I have since upgraded to the Suunto Vyper Air, and that goes into the HP port. I still have the Sherwood Insight and analog SPG, and am thinking about how I can use it was a backup computer. I have kept it in case I need to change it out on the surface in case there is a problem with the Vyper Air.

Since I purchased the reg, I also earlier this year purchased an inflator / backup reg combo to reduce the complexity of my BC. With the combination of the Suunto Vyrper air and the inflator, I now only have two hoses coming off the first stage (a good thing), along with the transmitter for the Vyper Air.

However, since the first stage only has one port, I am wondering how to connect my old computer as a backup? Can I buy a first stage by itself, one that has 2 HP ports on it? Is there such thing as a splitter on the HP port? Do I have to buy a new reg (first and second stage) that does have 2 HP ports on the first stage? Note that at the moment, I don't find anything wrong with my reg, so if I don't have to buy a new one, I woud rather not.

I'd like to know what some of my options are for hooking up my old computer/SPG as a backup.

TIA

AFAIK, the Sherwood Insight is not air-integrated, so it doesn't need to be connected to a HP hose. Move it to a wrist mount, a clipped off retractable mount, or inside a pocket.

Does the Insight have the same physical dimensions of a Vyper/Gekko/Favor/Zoop? This is a longshot...but if it has similar dimensions, then it might fit inside the standard recess of the Suunto modular console system. Just buy a one-"unit" expansion to Suunto's console and slap it in. As I mentioned, this would be a longshot since we're talking computers from two different manufacturers here.

If you're doing OW recreational dives, I wouldn't even bother diving with a backup SPG. Just keep the analog SPG in your save-a-dive kit in case the Vyper Air croaks. If you insist on installing a backup SPG, I suppose you could purchase the splitter that scubafanatic brought to your attention.

On a side note, I thought that the Aqualung Titan first stage had 1 HP port and 4 LP ports. Why does yours have only 3 LP ports? Is it an early Titan model? Just curious.

This is why first stages have one high pressure aperture.
More than one is primarily for configuration purposes.

Thanks for your replies. I knew someone would have a good answer.

I think might have to get that splitter. The Sherwood Insight is mounted in a console, which also has the SPG and a compass on back. After I experienced an air integration failure on my Vyper Air today, a backup SPG would not be a bad idea.

Bubbletrouble, the Titan does in fact have 4 LP ports on it. Yesterday was a long day, and I guess I couldn't count at the time.
