Wife and I will be on Roatan the first week of May staying at Las Rocas Resort. I'm confused about the weather in Central America. Belizes' rain season begins in May, but everything I've read about Roatan says the wet season is Nov-Feb. I also noticed the the low season begins at most resorts on Roatan on May 1....why?

What type of weather should we expect in May......Rain, temp, dive conditions (winds), etc.

Thanks for the help!!!

The weather? Nobody can predict the weather.

A quite a few years ago I spent a bit of time on the mainland of Honduras, would be similar to Belize I would guess. About April/May it started having hard thunderstorms at 3:00 in the afternoon every day, you could set your watch by it. I believe this is due to the fact of being the mainland and a larger land mass.

On the Islands you will get a good little storm come through once in a while, usually at night for some reason. During the days I would expect a lot of sun and temps in the 80's and low 90's. Winds will vary from place to place. A gentle sea breeze will be welcomed at that time of the year.

All in all, May is generally a great time to go.

Later, Hawk.

May is lovely, usually comparatively dry, and you have a greater chance of Whale Sharks depending on the phase of the moon. Don't get your hopes up on the critters- there are a lot of variables... if you see them, bonus. Enjoy Roatan for the micro treasures that it offers.

I always wonder... why- after someone books their trip... then~ they ask the questions.

Haven't booked yet. Wanted to be certain that the weather would be good at that time. Made the decision on the resort today. From you answers, we will start booking everything on Monday!!!!!!

I swear - with all of the Scubaboard members who are going to Roatan in May we need to have an official Scubaboard party.

I propose the following: SB PARTY THURSDAY NIGHTS IN MAY @ SUNDOWNERS

Come join us (May 5 - 12). Anyone who brings a copy of this post gets a free round. (I'm the crazy bloke with the beautiful wife)

A while back, I posted some monthly rainfall data for the Bay Islands. Here is the link:

It looks like May is one of the driest months. I stayed at Las Rocas for 2 weeks in March 2006 and liked it. You can see some photos I took of the resort here:

Look in the Roatan Land album. Although I am an avid snorkeler rather than a scuba diver, if you want any info about Las Rocas, feel free to P.M. me.
