We stayed as Casa Mexicana over the 4th of July weekend and the beds were pretty soft also the rooms very comfy. Excellent location to get the the boat docks in the a.m. I'd like to throw in that Deep Blue was an awesome shop dive with!

One reason for the hard, concrete beds is ease of recovery from hurricanes! In 1995, we had planned a trip to Coz (our first), arriving on a Sunday in October. The Thursday prior to that, Hurricane Roxanne really tore up the island. The jungles were fairly bare (looked wierd, no leaves on a lot of it), several hotels were closed for a while, the criuse ships didn't show up, it was fairly empty. BUT, I contacted Dave at Aldora divers (whom I was diving with) and he called me on the phone from Coz, and said the phones worked, power was on, and 1/2 or so of the hotels in business. so come on down! And we did. We moved to La Cieba hotel, and got there Sunday. about 1/2 their rooms were out of commission (they lost most of their windows and it all got wet). But they recovered quickly. Throw out the mattresses, wash the bed linens, sweep and hose down the room (concrete beds and drains in the tile floors). New glass, hang the curtains, new mattresses, and voila! back in business. So the concrete pedestals and tile floors are a survival mechanism!

BTW, the vacation was GREAT! The island was fairly empty, we got great service, diving was superb by about Tuesday when the water cleared again.

I also agree that the beds are fine at El Cid La Ceiba. They're no "Seally Posturpedic" or "Serta Perfect Sleeper" but they were acceptable. Before my May trip to Cozumel, I had read how bad it was going to be and had the name of the place to buy the "egg crate" cushions to add to the bed. I was so amazed that their beds were OK the first night that I never went out for the foam pads. I can't say what the rest of Cozumel's hotel's beds feel like however.

I've stayed at the Baracuda, the Plaza, and the Iberostar. I think the 'star may have been the worst/hardest. I woke up from a post dive nap, and even wondered if i'd taken a dcs hit, but I was just sore from the bed. I sleep for a week on an army cot while hunting, and it wasn't this "firm"

for the no frills no tv no telephone cheap dive package, Aqua Safari and Safari Inn....and the beds/AC....WOW! Now don't go telling every one on the planet! Of course, Oct. is our "annisversary" (29 years) trip to Coz, so someone tell me the beds at Allegro are decent......PLG...ROCK...Casa Mexicana, OK...

No one has mentioned Hotel Cozumel. How are the beds there and where do you get the foam pads if you want one?

You can buy egg crate foam mattresses at "Electra" at Ave. A.R.Salas and Ave. 20

Concrete beds.... Never seen them and I have been going to Cozumel 3 or 3 times a year for the last 12 years. Granted some are better than others but I find that here in the States too. I have seen a few folks sleeping on concrete but only after discovering "All-Inclusive" included drinks....

We have stayed at a number of properties and have never had this problem. Our current favorite hotels include in no particular order:" Plaza Las Glorias, Sun San Miguel, Caribe Blu, Costa Club and Casa Del Mar.

We dive almost exclusively with Equalizers, eat at least once a trip at La Cocay - If you have not tried this place, you have missed a jewell. Eating there is like watching the fancy cooking shows on TV and the price is like eating at an Outback Steak House - Awesome.

We published a large amount of information on Cozumel as well as some day trip information in and around Playa Del Carmen in Issue 25 of The Wet Gazette. Your are welcome to download a free copy at www.thewetgazette.com.
