Will be leaving tomorrow from NJ to dive in the Keys and put off buying a computer to the last minute. Does anyone know a good shop/store (where I wont get taken)starting from Ft. Lauderdale (which is where I'm landing to my end point (Duck Key/Hawkes Cay)? I was looking at Sunnto and uwatec wrist computers. Any help greatly appreciated...

You don't need a computer. All you need if your head, a bottom timer, and a chart. Save your two to several hundred dollars on education, thats something you don't ever have to replace.

I agree with foggy..I've made it for a while without a computer...Save your money!!!

You may already be on your way to South Florida, but just in case...

I wouldn't make a quick purchase on a dive computer. You can use your tables and bottom timer/watch. There are a lot of computers to choose from, many with features that are never used. They are expensive and the various models provide a substantial difference in NDL times. You may want a model that gives you an aggressive amount of NDL time, or you may want a model that is very conservative. Talk to your friends and do a lot of research and get the one that meets your needs/desires, not the one that has the best price.

If you rush, you may find yourself buying another one sooner that you ever thought you would

I also agree with Froggy computers are overrated spend the extra $ on education. If you must get a computer get a well made basic model because most of the stuff on the computers are not needed or used.

I prefer the wrist mount myself... don't let someone talk you into a comp with a transmitter that gives tank pressure that is just one more thing to break. Sticks to the basics... Ur head, charts and a good bottom timer.

Oh, bah. What does he know? He can't even get his mask de-fogged!

Depends upon the type of diving you do and how often. Two dives a day, do it in your head. Lots of dives on lots of continuous days, do some research and then get the computer.

The OP has asked a very straightforward question to which I have not seen a straightforwar answer so far.
He or she is obviously a certified diver. Prima facie the OP seems to have done her/his research well (based on the fact that he/she has narrowed down the choice of computer to Suunto/Uwatec). Why is everyone bent on giving advice that the OP has not even asked for?
I am sure he/she is an adult who has reached the decision to buy a computer after due deliberation and advice.
Why doesn't someone answer her/his question on a reputable dive shop between Fort Lauderdale and Duck Key where he/she can buy a computer without getting taken instead of turning this into another pro-computer anti-computer thread?

What straightforward answer did YOU provide?

Buy a Suunto Vyper. (that straightforward enough)

Simple, works, logs dives, has a guage mode, get a mount from Deep Sea Supply. Easy enough.
