i'm thinking of purchasing a compressor for multiple reasons. i'm new in scuba but i'm confident that my wife and i will enjoy for years to come. any reason's, obviously price is a big one, or thoughts why i should or should not? any ideas, recommendations of where to buy?
 
Don't do it because you think that you are going to save money. The only place that you save is time. If you have air available then stay with the dive shop.

That depends on the residual value. If he shops around and purchases a used one, then used it for a few years, the residual value may well be MORE than his original purchase price.

I thought about the whole thing long and hard before I bought a compressor. Now I wouldn't have it any other way.

I agree, though residual being more is probably not the norm. But selling it for about what you paid for it is.
But if you think that you can pump an AL80 for less than $5 then you are fooling yourself. There are many threads on here and TDS and they all will say the same. By the time you maintain your compressor and pay the added electric bill it is close to being the same. If you are going to add banks then it makes it even harder to "save". But again they usually hold their value.
If you have to drive an hour to get a fill then it would be worth it.

Nitrox fills (32%) cost me a tad over $2/fill (I use on average ~65 cu ft per dive) That's all variable costs, filters, oil, oxygen, electricity, but not depreciating the compressor.

The added convenience of getting my tanks filled when I want, with what mix I want, is worth it to me.
