i am 12 years old and i just recently completed my ssi diving coarse this past saterday and sunday . on saterday we went to hathaway pond ,i had a hard time equalizing so i popped a blood vessel in my nose on sunday we were going to go to sandwich town beach but it was to choppy so we headed to hathaway pond for our second dive i did not have a hard time equalizing but i still popped a blood vessel in my nose . if you are familar with hathaways pond then you know that there is a deck/platform that is 18' undre water and at about there i started getting this awful pain on the right side of my head and to be specific it was around my right eye brow and if you know what that is caused from then please let me know . the thermo clines were crazy one minute i could not even feel like i was in the water and the next i sericiously thought that i was going to get hypothermia . but on the bright side i had an awesome time i saw about a hundred fish i saw stripped bass, blue gill, sun, and perch my instructor was hopeing that we would see some eels but we didnt . and when i was taking my diving classes i was the only one in my class who knew the dive tables . i had an awesome time and i hope that i can go diving with my parents before diving season is over

thanxx

Hey there,

Congrats on your diving cert and welcome to Scuba Board! I don't know about the equalization blood vessel popping. Perhaps it was the way you pinched your nose and blew to clear your ears? The pain in your face could have been from the same thing and also from the differernce in temperature.

You said that you felt like you were going to get hypothermia, what wetsuit were you wearing?

Congrats on your certification ScubaGirl - welcome to scuba diving fun! :) Be careful with your ears and sinuses - if you feel too much pain, please don't push it. It is definitely not worth the possible problems you could have.

thank you i will keep that in mind

Congratulations on your certification.
Keep diving, practice your skills at every chance,
and HAVE FUN !

thank you

I would see your family doctor on the blood vessel issue. Are you prone to nose bleeds? If so, you might be aggrivating that when you pinch your nose to equalize. If you pop a vessel, it will take some time to heal, and will be weakened until it is completely healed, which could take up to 3 weeks or so. Also the Doctor, will be able to use a scope to look into your nose to see where the vessel is popping. if he can tell you where it is about, you might be able to plug off below or above it for the time being to help not re-open the same vessel. You do not want to keep opening the same vessel over and over again, ths could cause damage to the vessel which might become a factor years from now. Get it checked, and then have fun diving

I once had the pain you're talking about near my eyebrow. It was after I'd had a sinus infection for about 3 weeks. I thought it had cleared but at only 12 feet or so on my descent, it hurt....like someone hit me with a ballpene hammer. If you feel that pain, stop your descent. You may equalize it enough to get down but could cause problems coming back up, known as a reverse squeeze.
You really should see a doctor about the popped blood vessel. Do you mean that your nose was bleeding and flowing blood?
Sinus and ears are critical in diving. You have to take good care of them. Glad to hear you had so much fun though.

Congrats on your certification. did you squeeze your nose and blow to equalize? If so that can sometimes result in poping blood vessels if you blow too hard. Keep diving, but don't push it deeper if you can't equalize.

ya my moms friend said that when he went diving for his first time that he got a bloody nose also and my head i guess i just have to get use to it
