I don't recall navigation in my OW class.. (PADI)

PADI has required compass use for Open Water Divers since before I was certified (25 years ago) and is still taught today. It's in the Open Water Diver manual (and eLearning), again in the classroom, practiced on land and then finally in the water on a checkout dive. So your instructor should have done this with you. But you wouldn't be the first person to forget one of the skills they were taught in their Open Water course
