I really want to go to LC but I am a little concerned about rougher waters (Dont do good with smaller boats and choppy waves), strong currents, etc. Also, what is the water temp in Nov and Jan? We only go to one or at most two dive trips a yr so we dont want to take too many chances with winter weather. We usually go in the summer but may not be able to next summer and we dont want to wait anyway! I assume a 3mm full suit is more than enough? How far are the boat rides? Need windbreakers in Nov or Jan? Thanks.

I just got back from Little Cayman. We dove the north side of the island. During the summer, the winds seem to come from the south so the north side of the island is the most sheltered. We did have one morning where we did the first dive on the south side of the island because there was considerable chop on the north side.

Their boats are 42'. They can handle some chop. If the stuff is coming from the north, the south side of the island will be fine. If it is coming from the south, the north side is fine. I have not seen a time when it was too rough to go out. But I have not seen a day that I would consider "rough".

The weather in November is "iffy" at best. I have seen some Novembers there where it rained every day of the month and the seas were fairly rough. A few times--just a few--November was generally nice weather. October is always horrible, and some of the resorts (e.g. Pirate's Point) close during October because of the inclement weather.

In contrast, January is in the dry season and you usually have clear skies. However, fronts move down from the north periodically and can make for a few days of rough seas.

All in all, I would choose January over November. In fact, I do! I used to go down to Little Cayman for 6-8 months at a stretch, generally October - May, but these days limit myself to one month a year. And I normally do it mid-January to mid-February, when the weather is best.

We were in LC in January - weather was great. A little rain in the early a.m. a few days - nothing that stopped the boats from going out - and one day of rough water - There were 4 of us - I'm very hot natured - didn't need a windbreaker - and another diver is very cold natured - she did wear a light jacket. :) Headed back in Feb! Enjoy!
