I have a thin plastic faced SPG that I've used on my pony. Didn't take an extra case with it and the face is scratched. Can't tell under water, but very visible on land.

I use bare 2" B&G SPGs, the ones out of the Termo factory, some are branded and some are not. I don't like boots as I can't see what's going on underneath and they are harder to rinse properly, ditto harder to change out spool, especially if the boot is tight. I don't think a bare plastic one would hold up anywhere near as long as B&G. I guess it would also depend how much you dive, I'm lucky enough to be able to dive weekly so my gear sometimes takes unavoidable knocks, especially during rough entries/exits. it's a numbers game, eventually it'll get hit hard.

I use 2” brass and glass. Heavy but I prefer it.

The all plastic gauges feel like a joke after diving with a B&G. I bought one on closeout. I don't know how long it will last, but I guess I'll give it a shot. Of course I got a boot for it which should be here tomorrow.

My initial feeling is it doesn't seem worth the little bit of weight savings for such a major difference in build quality.

I’m using a 2” Highland SPG with Miflex hose for over 4 years (> 200 dives) now. The plastic face looks pretty scratched up on dry land, but it still looks clear enough underwater. It’s compact, no battery required, no AI transmitter failure to worry about, light & slim = great backup gear for traveling & diving overseas.

Thank You (again) for all the replies.

I have ordered the SPG in my op, the one negative that it rattles a bit has been suggested to be because the working touch the sides when shaken vigorously.

My next trip is the Red Sea in April, so I will let you know how it goes.
