Thanks very much for the clarification.

I misinterpretated the maximum aperture specs at both ends of the zoom for the aperature range. Both the G12 and LX5 go out to F8 which gives you some depth of field. The S95 does seem to stop at F4.9. I don't see any max aperature for the XZ-1 but given its size I am guessing it to goes out to F8. The 1 cm focus but not many critters will let me get 3/8 of an inch away, let alone 2 inches. Strobes are tough when you are so close as well aren't they (camera can block it)?

I need to really understand how much bigger the setup is with these larger cameras before deciding, because there are some optical advantages.

:)

It's the only one other than the G12 that focuses down to 1cm while allowing you to use your strobe. The 2.0/3.3 refers to its widest aperture at either end of its zoom range...... It's smallest aperture is 8.0 in camera mode and 11.0 in movie mode.

hope this picture will give you the idea of the size XZ-1, PT-050, Inon D2000, Inon UCL165M67, fantasea tray/arm, slightly negative under water but no problem for her to handle - She's 12 years, petit 145 cm tall.
click one of the link below my signature for the result she get with this set-up.

I ended up going for the more compact rig...

Canon Powershot S95
Fisheye FIX S95 Housing
Inon UCL-165AD Wet Macro
UCLS Tray, Handle, 5" Arm and Clamps
Inon S-2000 Strobe & Optical Cable

I am sure that I would have been happy with any of these cameras or housings in question over my old rig.

Best,

Bob
