YCW:
Saw the DVD "After the Sunset" the other day (starring Pierce Brosnan and Salma Hayek). There is a part where Brosnan and Hayek went wreck diving and wearing these full face masks, and able to talk to each other underwater. Is it for real?

They're real. you can even patch them through to a satellite phone. The technology is so well developed that your colleagues could theoretically reach you even you were diving the Titanic......

I was diving in January in Palau and there was a couple that had this gear. It was somewhat complicated from a gear standpoint. But they had a huge problem. When they talked they ended up by using more of their air (?) which was unnoticed. So because they had no octopus or mask they ended up by cutting their dives early.

I use the gear and it is a fallacy that you use more of your air, with proper gear and training our dives are as long or longer than most. And you do still have an octopus, and most carry a spare mask for an emergency. While I enjoy silence underwater, it is very handy to be able to call to your buddy to communicate something that might take a while to use sign language, or write out on a slate. It has been very helpful in some serious situations. Having said that, if you don't enjoy listening to your buddy above water, you may not want to equip yourselves this way below water...

And dannobee, a better link would have been Ocean Technology Systems who supplied the equipment for After the Sunset :)

I dove with a couple that used something interesting. They had typed out, printed and laminated a list of twenty or so sentences. They each had a copy attached to their bc, and when needed they just pointed to the laminated form and indicated the number. Worked for them. This couple was even married underwater on scuba.
