everyone in my club knows 2 signals:

this one is used for cold water..
shake hand from side to side-(somethings wrong)-grab crotch-(my balls)- move hand across throat-(are gone)-

this one is used for a bad situation..
make thrusting motion with hips and point thumb over shoulder-(F*** THIS IM OUTTA HERE)

I rather enjoy the serenity of communicating silently underwater, or not at all. For those times when detailed messages need to be sent, I have a 6-leaf slate with attached pencil.

Obviously, sounds of excitement travel well underwater and have gotten attention before, at rather good distances. I've also caught dive buddies laughing into regulators and that sounds pretty cool.

Peace,
Greg

You can place the 2nd stage on the persons head or mask and talk. They should be able to understand you.

It would be cool to be able to talk to each other underwater but I agree that the silent eerieness of the dive is very pleasant. So if I had some device that allowed communication, I would want it to convert voices into a whispering ethereal sirens' call. That way you could talk but it would still preserve the experience.

:acid:

I can still remember my first night dive with my two sons. My younger son was to my right when a huge tarpon smoked in over his shoulder to snap a fish out in front of us. I knew right away the tarpon were coming without seeing them because my son was yelling and laughing at the top of his lungs. He really enjoyed that sneak attack from the biggest thing he'd been around underwater, at night to boot!

I think what he said was, "ib isss!!! ib issss!!!! ahahahahahahaha!!!!" Which I translated as "big fish!!! big fish!!! {laughter}" I was right.

I learned in the Bahamas that you can talk to your buddy under water. My buddy swam up to me and very clearly yelled 'Bull Shark' and pointed at the giant shark coming around the reef towards us.

Are you sure he wasn't pointing at you and yelling, "Eat him!" :rofl3:
