It's hard to compare lessons in a pool to real diving. When I dive 81 degree water, I usually use only a 0.5 mm suit--mostly for exposure protection, not warmth.
In contrast, when I teach a pool lesson, I wear a 3 mm shorty in our 87 degree pool water. [We keep it warm because we also do infant swim classes.] A couple of weeks ago, I started getting cold, and we saw that the pool temperature had plunged to 84 degrees. I was chilled.
I once taught for another group that used a conventional swimming pool. We were all wearing full 33 mm suits. Every now and then, we all got out and got into the hot tub to warm up.
