Coiled clip for accessories question

hazmat....was just trying to get your attention to the fact that as an experienced diver and technical diver, 'coil' anything other then possibly a camera system, there are simple and as effective ways to do things....coils are just asking for trouble in your diving, you usually grow out of that stage very quickly and learn that all the little goodies on the dive shops wall is just someone's idea to make $. You have gotten some great advise in your thread and I hope mine was of help also. I have been were you are today, and through trial and error have a box full of 'scuba' aids so to speak. I am glad you are into scuba and wish you all the best in your fun adventures ahead!!!

Jorgy , my primary back-up light Photon Torpedo is rigged to my kit in a very similar way!!
As a small boy we lived in Syracuse for a few years,,,,just remember the snow blow into drifts and covering my 2nd. floor window!!

I use a similar home made clip on many lights. Use the split ring or some means to attach the light as tightly to the device as possible, The coil line thingy is already kinda long so anyway you can mimize the length will be beneficial.

I like that kind of attachment becuase you can often turn the light on and use it for a short duration without fiddling with the clip. If you really got to get the light down into the hole or are doing a night dive, then you release the fastex clip which extends the coil line and allows you freedom to manipulate the light.


One of the advantages is that whether the fastex clip is closed or open (you can always drop the light and it will stay attached, which is a very good thing when catching lobsters at night when you can't have something on your wrist. With some other clips, you need to detach the light from the BC to get full extension of the light and then it is vunerable to being dropped or lost. The brass clip allows the entire coil thingy to be removed from the BC if there should be an entanglement.

After loosing half a dozen lights during the day, because I would unclip them, use them in a hole and then forget to pick them up again, I went for the coil lanyard.

I'll think about all of it and see what I do. I can by all means return or exchange that clip. I bought it locally.

I have a similar clip and find it very useful for my camera. It is positively buoyant so I can just let go and it will float above me out of harms way. Kinda nice if you want to use your hands for other things.

It looks like it hangs, with the clip closed, about 10" from your body. Do you not find this to be annoying?

Coil lanyards are great for cameras where you will have the camera in your hand 90%+ of the time, or lights when, similarly, they will be in your hand the majority of the time. They don't hold the light/camera super close when not in use, however, so they're not best if it's only an occasional-use item. Better to clip them into a pocket or something.

The bolt snap attaches to a BC d-ring, and you use either the split ring of the cord (regular slip knot) to attach it to the camera/light, depending on the attachment point your accessory offers.

Be careful with the coil when un-clipped... if your accessory (camera rigs, mostly) is very heavy, or the seas are very rough, it's not a stupendously robust connection. It's mostly for emergencies where you have to let go of the device for a moment without fearing for immediate loss.
