Because ole knowledgeable one...its not the same in a pool...any indoor pool is most likely going to be heated to some extent and certainly it doesnt compare to 40 open water diving...which is what I really need.
It's not just about the new gear, it's about not diving cold water since May and well..I would feel much better getting some dives in before I'm going to strap on some machine to my back and partake in skills.
