Wouldn't it be better than not, to close out posts that have run their course (sold classified items, fulfilled info requests, invites, whatever), rather than to leave the post open?
Also, for classifieds ads, group your items correctly, with a link to other, different items for sale (posted in their own link under the appropriate heading), and if they're not sold in reasonable time re-post the listing with an acknowledgemnet of same to confirm that the items are still available. Kind of like re-listing an item on ebay after it has run its' course. I've found tons of old ads that are still open, wherein the item's were sold, but the post not closed, and wherein the people don't even bother responding to requests about the iitem.
