What close calls have you guys witnessed diving here in Hawaii? Here's one to start...
Several years ago I was waiting for the Turtle Heaven mooring to become available. Those in Kona will know this is a site right outside Honokohau Marina. When moored here under the usual conditions, the stern of your boat would be toward the shore. There is a shallow shelf right behind the boat that comes up to about 15 feet deep. This makes for a nice safety stop area. Now it is very rare to see someone water skiing around here. But a boat with a water skier flew right behind the boat that was at the dive site...between the boat and the shore..where divers were doing their safety stops. I would guess the boat flew by at full speed within 50 feet of the back of the dive boat (with dive flag out). I CANNOT believe that the whole group wasn't decapitated. It was sheer luck. I was mortified. I called someone at the harbor but I didn't know the name of the boat. If was on that dive boat, I would have done whatever it took to track down that boat!
