clearing the mask

Agree with the above (somewhere!) about breathing out when doing it. For mask drills to start with lots of people find it easier to start breating out through their nose before flooding the mask and continue doing it until its cleared and resealed.
Once you get the hang of that you can tackle removals.
 
The original poster probably has it down pat by now but for the benefit of others finding the thread I'd add not to blow too fast or much of your air will never make it up into the mask to displace the water. In trying to do the exercise deftly this is one time when haste makes waste.
