Purging when the regulator is detached from the tank can only eventually allow some water drops to enter it (if it is not completely dry). I would refrain from pressing the purge button when the system is not under pressure.

I have to purge mine or i cant get them off the tank. Iv seen some people blow o-rings on the first stage when they dont purge before removing.

Well then you are not purging them when they are detached from the tank... you are purging them *to* detach them from the tank.

Here is a link to what has been working for us. Soaking with the system pressurized trumps any other method. Also by having it pressurized you can flow some air through the system in the final swish.
