I did it! I did mask clearing today! Just had to share it with everyone.

After watching the video I have for class I saw what they did and figured it out. I also took pointers from some of you on this site. As I mentioned before, I have been a nose plugger all my life. I had to get used to having that feeling of water up my nose but not in it. So this is what I did, and I hope it helps someone else...

I started by just breathing with a reg and no mask. With the reg that I was using the bubbles were going straight up my nose, so I looked down and they went off to the side. Then I would put on the mask and let in a little water from the top and get used to having some water in it and kept breathing. If it felt like the water was too far up, I would just let a little air out of my nose. When It came to taking the mask all the way off, I would take a deep breath and blow a little air out of my nose at the same time but break the seal of the mask from the top first so water wouldn't rush up my nose from the bottom. Took another deep breath and put the mask up to my face and at the same time blew air out of my nose and looked up at the same time to clear the mask. Took another breath to clear the rest of the water out if needed and then put the strap on. My mistake was that I tryed to put the strap on before I cleared.

I knew I could do it, it was just a matter of figuring out how. Well that's my story and I'm stickn' to it! Thanks everybody for all your tips and encouragement, it helped!:D

well done!!

i KNOW how stressful that skill is and how its just something you HAVE to do so yippee, its done now!

i can say i havent taken my mask off since open water and only recently have i decided (10yrs later) that i need to address this

ive started with half flooding my mask.... been doing it for about 6months now so in about 6 years i might be brave enough to take it off :D

good going and enjoy

You look happy...! :D

Glad you overcame your obstacles. I never had any problems at all in any of my coursee for some reason, and I suspect that left me a little complacent. I suspect you learn better when you do have obstacles in training.

You must not have ever forgot to rinse you mask after using industrial strenght DeFog. :crying: I got a lot of practice on that; still do at times.

There you go, you're over the hump! If you're comfortable with the mask off breathing and clear then the rest is just task mastering.

Remember that until your mask is strapped it can still get away from you. I suspect that with a little practice you'll be setting the strap before you clear. You can always reach back to fine tune it after.

Be sure to practice this skill with a hood and gloves while in the pool. Most "public" hoods have a pretty big face opening but still make sure that the mask skirt is under the hood. When you get your own you may have a face seal that you trim to overlap the mask to keep you cozy. That's a little trickier but by then you will be looking for a new challenge. Step by Step.

Have a blast and keep us posted.

Congrats! It's great to here you made it through that skill. I've taken mine off a few times usually forgot to rinse off defog like Don said (I don't like to surface for something that silly).

I know mine lose on back rolls, too, it seems.
