In short, this is one of these things where the current design works quite well when used properly and it's just not worth fretting about.

It doesn't work well as a dump; front placement traps air. That is called working somewhat, not working well. Just because it does not trap a lot, does not mean it traps none. It certainly is enough to make warm water divers pissed at the mounting, and dive old wings, or flip the dual bladder wings.

I don't dive in drysuits or thick neoprene. I don't wear weight except to give to customers. The air trapping on a front mounted butt dump is a PITA. Again, those diving dry may never even put air in their BCD so it may not matter to them. When diving with minimal or no exposure protection, thus without weights means that this trapping means front mounted butt dumps requires the corrugated hose to vent. Or flipping the dual bladder wings to put the dump in back. On a single wing, the front mounted dump makes for the corrugated having to be used.

Once the corrugated hose is needed to dump the last bit of air anyway, then there is no real difference between donuts and horseshoes.

Only wing I have ever seen with a rear facing butt dump was a Dive Rite Venture It wrapped the tank so at the OPV,the dump was not facing the rear, but rather to starboard. The Wing had a cord thread through a sleeve so it could be reached on the front of the wing. When the guy tried to dump by pulling the cord, (he did not have monkey arms) he lowered the valve which from my perspective seemed ineffective. I suspect Dive Rite joined the other manufacturers because when all was said and done, front facing is right. (I have all the respect in the world for Lamar.).

All the Travel Wings made before 2007 or so had rear mounted dumps. They were also on the right side. I understand the switch to the left side, but the move to the front of the bladder makes them into OPVs since they do not fully dump.

(Monkey arms, and extra joints? Maybe it is because I don't have arthritis that I cannot understand how pulling a rear mounted dump is difficult. None of my students have ever had a problem pulling a rear mounted dump, nor have any recreational divers I have ever seen. Nor do they pull the dump forward, anymore than they hold the corrugated hose down to vent.)

I don't notice a difference between donut and horseshoe.
But since many divers have a preference, used horseshoe wings can be had for $125 all of the time.

It takes me a lot of effort to equalize the donut wing through the lower arc , I have to stick the but up almost bending in half to make the air go through it. It\s so much easier to do it through the upper arch.

Come on are you serious? With the lungs having a volume 8-12lb you worry about an couple of grams of trapped air ? It's like saying I did not drink enough because I could not get last drops of vodka out of the bottle.

I'll go along with that. In either case, we have to come off trim to vent gas. A matter of personal preference I suppose. But the butt dump does work.

Definitely, I forgot when it was the last time I used the corrugated hose for dumping air/

I have a Zeagle horseshoe wing and dive dry in the NW. I do notice air trapped, and sometimes one side. So I've been thinking about a donut instead if it makes equalizing/dumping easier.. I run close on my weight, so towards the end of the dive, I literally have to roll on my back and sit upright to get that last air out of my BC, which is really annoying. All the other options dont do it. (butt up dump, roll, shoulder raise, etc).
