I'm headed to Chuuk/Truk later this month (Sept 2009). What are the absolute 'must sees'. I've read the books...what are your thoughts?

Tony

Not sure who you are diving with but a key is TALK TO THE GUIDES. They know the key features and on the Odessey they would take you right to them which can matter with depths and maxing time down. If you are diving the Odessey there is a trip report, photos, slide show at our site....

I've been there many, many times and it's really a hard question to answer, depending upon if you're a photographer, comfortable below 150, etc., but here's my recommendations not in any particular order.

Fujikawa Maru, zeros in hold, lots of artifacts, loads of corals and life.

Shinkoku Maru..possible the best wreck dive for seeing everything in the lagoon. Impossible to really see everything n one dive. Best coral and marine life wreck.

Nippo Maru..shallowest of the deep wrecks, more pristine, tank on deck, great bridge.

San Fransisco Maru..deep but tanks on deck, mines, superb bow gun., totally loaded with bombs, torpedoes, etc. Definitely a deco dive.

Betty Bomber and Emily Flying boat...make sure you do them on one dive..15 min on one, then move to the other for the rest of the dive. Both areat 60' or less. You just don't see planes like this anywhere else in the pacific. You can also snorkel on a zero between dives. Ask to do this.

Fumitzuki destroyer...one of 2 warships in the lagoon, but this is much shallower 90-120. High speed props, bow gun, marine life. Very near the Shinkoku.

There's a lot more wrecks, but for the first time if you get these you've got the best quality ones in.

Yu can see videos of some of them here to give you an idea: Truk Lagoon Videos and Diving

Have fun.

Sweet! Thanks for the info. I'm headed out on the Thorfinn. I've read posts on both ends of the spectrum. I'll post what I find out.

Night dives on the Shinkoku and the Fujikawa.

Another vote for the Shinkoku Maru, perhaps the most encrusted wreck in the lagoon :)

I have a trip report from six years ago that will give some insight into most of the wrecks: http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/pacific-islands/28819-truk-report.html

Have a great trip and please post a report when you return.

The above-listed dives are all extraordinary. Working your way from the torpedo hole of the Shinkoku Maru through its engine room, exploring the holds and the airplanes and parts inside those holds of the Fujikawa Maru, seeing the battle tanks on the deck of and descending into the loaded holds on the San Francisco Maru, are all awesome. In addition, the Hoki Maru has a very interesting cargo of trucks and bulldozers. Meanwhile, if you want to see human remains, try the engine rooms of the Yamagiri Maru and the Heian Maru.
