Shogan.....you are getting some very good advice from DA, awap, Herman, Keyshunter. My bet is that they are far more more knowledgeable than your local Sherwood tech...plus they don't have a financial incentive to sell you a new reg.

....again, it's only a few thousand PSI worth of pressure 1/2 an inch from the back of one's skull.....why worry?

Don't get dramatic. A loss of chrome is a cosmetic issue, nothing more, if it doesn't leak when properly installed with a good O ring it's good to go.

The good side of it the seller said he would take it back if I wanted so I'll see what the sherwood tech recommends.

Don't be surprised if he recommends you replace the regulator. Unfortunately, some shops recommendations in such situations are strongly effected by what maximizes profit.

Shogan,
As long as you are going to take the reg to a Sherwood tech, you might as well have him pop off the end cap and take a look. Usually a Sherwood is very clean if the dry bleed system is working properly. Also, while he is in the area, have him put a 3/32" allen wrench in the flow restrictor screw to be sure that it is free.

Ditto.

Wait a minute, that reg is totally screwed up and must be disposed of properly- it's life support equipment you know. Used regs are highly dangerous and should never be used. As a service to my SB brother I will happy dispose of it properly at my own expence, I will even pay shipping. :)

Ohh man I feel the Love from my fellow SCUBA brothers.

I found this as a good opportunity to test the LDS. First I'll say they only charge 20 per stage+plus parts. (Clearly they are an on site operation) . Second they handle all the local fire/police departments. Third the price quoted on parts was appropriate (up to $8 for the sherwood kit maybe a little more if a certain filter needed replacing). He's going to call me first of the week and let me know if the Reg is in good function order and service it. Though he said he doubts there would be any problems.

He didn't have a problem with how I acquired the item, even spoke of the good deal another customer of his had found there.

So Hats off to Louisville Dive Shop :D

I have refaced several first stage inlet faces on a lathe. The thing with chrome on regulators is it is quite thick and can flake off. To initially remove it so the flake does not start to peel down the side of the inlet as well , I use a diamond file to face off the remaining chrome and then face it off so that the face is square to the inlet axis. Squareness though isn't nearly as important as flatness of the face. Judicious filing could do the whole job. Just depends on your hand tool skill level.
In defense of LDS's just wanting to replace the part is just a headache saver. If they do that work and then for some reason there is a leak the customer will want his money refunded or the refund put towards the new part. It's just easier to sell a new one. Sounds like though on the OP's reg that the whole body would have to be replaced. $$$$$
The other problem with exposed brass and chrome is that it's like the bark knocked off a tree. It just start spreading. Especially if salt does not get rinsed off of it thoroughly.
Safety wise though there is nothing to fear.

Just go off the phone with them. He already finished it. Only problem he said was someone had used an incorrect oring at some point.

Total $28 bucks I'm in it for a grand total of $50
