Ok, I took a chance on EBAY and it said good condition but when I got this first stage it looks like it went through about 10 seasons in a busy rental fleet in carribean. Most scratches etc don't bother me. But the part that would seat on the oring is missing chrome. Not all the way across the seat but more than 50%. Can't feel it but I can see it. Looks like something banged the chrome and made it flake off.

My question is will this be a likely point to blow orings? Would you use it? Obviously going to get it serviced if I keep it.

What regulator and what o-ring? It is not uncommon to have chrome loss and the regulator still function just fine. In fact, I have a number of old piston regulators that are mostly brass on the piston LP o-ring seating surface and they all work just fine.

...sounds like you mean the part of the 1st-stage that contacts the tank valve O-ring ? .....let's just say I'd be nervous trying to contain/restrain 3000 - 3500 psi worth of tank pressure with an even remotely 'iffy' spot on that critical area!

If it is the yoke retainer (nut) seal to the tank, that is a static o-ring with less potential problem. If it seals reliably, I would not hesitate to use it. Or you could replace the yoke retainer.

As AWAP said, if it's the part that mates with the tank, you can easily replace it. In fact, if it's a popular brand and you know a busy shop, they might give you one for free or cheap, since it gets removed when they do a yoke->DIN conversion.

Or just reface it. It's a simple matter to polish it off and if you remove all the chrome so what. If you are having it serviced, the shop should clean up that face as a normal part of their service. No big deal at all.

Sherwood Magnum 5300 model

Yes the part on the first stage that mates with the oring on the tank valve.

Looking at the schematics I don't see how that part could be replaced as it appears to be part of the primary body of the first stage.

So I'm hearing 1 know way and one it should buff right out.

Guess I'll go have my first trip to the dive shop and see what they say.

Scrapes and scuff anywhere but there would not have bothered me at all.

So let me get this right...

You bought a regulator off of ebay and did not plan on having it rebuild the first day you received it?
The yoke retainer is replaceable, if it has heavy wear on it then it should be replaced.

I had planned to have it serviced right away. I figured serviced meant having it torn apart replaced orings etc etc and pray there wasn't anything seriously wrong inside. Just wasn't expecting a Giant Flake of chrome missing from the primary mating point of the assembly. And didn't know how critical flaking chrome is as it's a very thin layer.

Guess I'll stick to buy new on ebay like the complete brand new oasis, with full genesis guauge console, and octo/inflator with the tags on I got for $290 (300 shipped).

Win some loose some.

I'

....again, it's only a few thousand PSI worth of pressure 1/2 an inch from the back of one's skull.....why worry?
