Hi,

I am new to scuba diving. I completed my classroom work in Dec and looking to do my checkout dives in Feb. What can I expect from my checkout dive? Is it just to review your skills that you learned in the pool?

welcome aboard, first of all.

the check out dives (normally 4 open water dives) will require you to perform the
skills you learned in class (such as mask-clearing, ascents, etc.) in an open water
setting. you won't be doing anything new, just repeating what you did in the pool.

you should talk to your instructor ahead of time and ask what order he plans to
do the skills in, etc., just to familiarize yourself with the plan.

you'll love it!

(and remember, it only gets better)

Question, Itlax: Where will you being doing your OW in Feb? Just noticed that you're in NJ, and the Atlantic around the northeast ain't exactly bath water right now!

If you are doing your checkouts in NJ, I would assume you could expect it to be a little chilly :D

Otherwise,it should be as H2Andy said.

and better, and better, and better.......

If you're getting checked out in cold water, that will mean wearing some serious neoprene and the weight to offset its buoyancy. These are additional stressors for students here in the Northwest. A hood and gloves will heighten the effect if you're not used to them. Our shop's OW courses get students into 7-mil suits plus hoods and gloves for the final pool sessions, to help them acclimatize to what they'll wear in the lake during checkouts.

This is assuming you've not learned drysuit technique in your open water course. :)

It has been pretty cold in Jersey this past month. Luckly, I will be heading to Fajardo, Puerto Rico for the checkout dive.

If you did the PADI Open water course and you have the blue log book ? you can read about the skills you will do in the water, In the log book the instructor has a section to sign and you to fill in dive details, also after module 3 in the open water manual there is a list of the first two dives skills listed there and after Module 5 the same type of list is there.

Good plan! Hope you have a great time; follow up with a post here to let us know how it went.

In that case, you may well do more than people are telling you here. As far as skills are concerned, they are right. But you should also get a pretty nice dive led by your instructor. The skills themselves will probably only be a portion of what you do. When people do checkout dives in less hospitable waters, frequently the goal is to do the skills and go home. When you are in a nice dive area, though, the skills are often built into what would otherwise be a pleasant recreational dive.

Just got back from Puerto Rico and finally certified. I had a great time doing my checkout dives. During each dive, we spend sometime practicing the skills we learned in the pool and the remaining time site seeing. I am hooked. I can't wait to dive again.
