So, I'm going to Cozumel in June. Where would you do a check out dive on the first day? I arrive at 1:30 PM and I'm staying at the Casa Mexicana. Thinking of the shore diving at Caribe Blu as I'd also like to have my wife check them out for future trips.

A decent but safe dive will do. This will be our first trip to Coz so I'd like to get some experience with drift diving and current from the boat before trying anything too adventurous from shore.

I did one right across the street from Casa Mexicana. It may not be the best dive area, but, it served its purpose. (Also, I'm from a landlocked region and 50' visibility anywhere in Cozumel beats a 5' visibility lake anytime)

Caribe Blu would be an excellent place to do that. There's a dive shop right there right on the water where you can get tanks and weights. There's a dock you can giant stride off of into about 12 feet of water, and there's a cut through the ironstone and a smooth sandy walkin to about 6 feet of depth. It's where you'll come ashore, too.

If you go out about 100 feet and south to about where the second building across the street from the hotel is, then there a bunch of nice little coral heads with lots of life. If the current is running, then hug the ironstone until you get a bit upcurrent of that second house, and then head out and drift back to Caribe Blu. I've done that dive many times, it's a nice little checkout with some stuff to see.

Another kinda cool dive you can do from there is get in there and drift along the ironstone down to Scuba Club Cozumel.

Have a good trip!

Anyone have any thoughts in the La Ceiba plane wreck as a checkout dive? My guide book says there are small coral heads, some life and usually no current.
