Here's a good LP vs LDS story (incidentally, I've buy from both).

Just bought myself a new Henderson 3mm from my favourite LDS. Anything I buy from an LDS I buy from them, so they cut me a bit of a discount. Didn't have to buy a lot of other crap, or anything else. Just the 3mm. Checked the same item on LP, which was about $20 more.

Sometimes a good LDS can surprise you....

The reg I purchased from a LDS failed and had to be replaced on warranty. The warranty replacement was then recalled by the mfg for a second problem, DOH!

Another reg I bought online while waiting for the warranty/recall work is still breathing flawlessly...

So, there's really no direct correlation as to where you buy the stuff and how reliable it is...
