While checking around other recomendations, I heard that Las Flamitas (2 doors south of Las Palmas on the same street) was a good place to eat. Also, La Candela at Ave. 15 and calle 2 was good too. Anyone ever try these places or hear about them? The post I read had the person saying that they liked Las Flamitas more than Las Palmas!

Excellent places, but one not on the list is Otates.
the soup ( I forgot the name of it ) that you toss the cabbage into is real nice and would fill two up.

Need to try Mesa 17.

I second (or third or fourth) El Pique. We love the tacos chuletas (pork chop tacos). The grilled chicken place we ate at (north of the San Franciso mkt) was really good, but keep in mind it's cash and carry. What about Conchitas del Caribe? Don't hold me to it, but I think it's like on 65th, or there abouts. Suppose to be very reasonable, with good tasting food. Mostly locals. There was mention of it in a travel mag recently, and the guys in the Aldora dive shop talked highly of it - but I never see it mentioned on this board. Is there a reason - or is it still relatively unknown?

You're right, I've eaten there, the food is great, and it's all locals. The place was hot as h... inside with ceiling fans running. It's one of those indoor outdoor restaurants. It was inexpensive, the fish and ceviche was tasty and 12 ounce bottles of Fanta soda's were only a buck.

Ok, you want cheap, I would recommend the Mexican fast food place upstairs in the mall behind the Chedreui market. Sorry I don't know the name of the place but it is very inexpensive and in an air conditioned place, next to Burger King, its not Taco Bell you need to know a little Spanish and you can even see a movie in English after dinner at the theater. If someone has already recommended the place sorry I didn't recognize the name.

Have fun on your trip.

OK, We all know where the good food is on Cozumel right? We've got our favorite dinner places that we can't miss at least once every Cozumel visit. I'm talking about the Prima's, La Veranda's, Pancho's Backyard, the La Choza's and such. They aren't cheap however, but we go because they're so good. But what are some of the less expensive places that have great food off of the beaten path? It might be a place that you go to for lunch or even a dinner on an off night. I know some of you that go to Cozumel often know of these places because I've seen some of them here every now and then. We're going to Cozumel soon (European Plan) and want to do the eat in town every meal. We'll do our favorites for several dinners, but wondered if there were some real bargains out there with good food. I have no problem eating with the locals who know where the good moderately priced food is.

Thanks,
Matt
Especias...yummy! Medium priced. Excellent food.

I agree. After just returning from Coz I can say that the food was much more expensive than I thought it would be. I paid 12 bucks for a crappy lasagna at Guido's with no sides, bread, or salad included. And this was the lunch menu. Avoid eating where pod people hang out. In NYC, I can get Lasagna for 7 bucks with a salad and bread and it is great. I found the food on Coz to be a bit expensive and not very good. JMHO. Gringo prices are in effect! Food was my ONLY Cozumel complaint. Everything else is simply heaven!

The food in Coz, if you know where to go IS reasonably priced and among the best I have ever had anywhere in the world. As a matter of fact, sometimes I get almost as excited as the restaurants I will be going to as the dive sites. I'm from NYC too and I would agree with the previous poster as far as NEVER going to a place like Primas or Guidos. You are correct, the Italian food in NYC is far and away superior and usually cheaper. However, I challenge you to find Mexican cuisine anywhere near the quality of Coz in the entire tri state area. It just doesn't exist here in my opinion. I now also realize, since I have gotten back from Thailand, that the same can be said for Thai food. The only non-mexican restaurant I always go to when I visit Coz is French Quarter. As far as price is concerned, some places are higher than others, but generally I think the prices are pretty reasonable.

I'm glad that El Pique is getting the recognition it deserves. I agree that it is the best Taco place on the island.
