OK, We all know where the good food is on Cozumel right? We've got our favorite dinner places that we can't miss at least once every Cozumel visit. I'm talking about the Prima's, La Veranda's, Pancho's Backyard, the La Choza's and such. They aren't cheap however, but we go because they're so good. But what are some of the less expensive places that have great food off of the beaten path? It might be a place that you go to for lunch or even a dinner on an off night. I know some of you that go to Cozumel often know of these places because I've seen some of them here every now and then. We're going to Cozumel soon (European Plan) and want to do the eat in town every meal. We'll do our favorites for several dinners, but wondered if there were some real bargains out there with good food. I have no problem eating with the locals who know where the good moderately priced food is.

Thanks,
Matt

Try Albino's.... Very inexpensive and great food. we always put them on the list.

Just out of curiosity, how much are some of the nicer places like Prima's anyways?

The best inexpensive restaurant on Cozumel has got to be La Mission. Not the nice one near the water, not the nice one at the house. The one full of locals in the middle. Been trying to keep it a secret, but I have no plans to return in the next couple of years so you guys can have it. Great breakfast, order the tacos for dinner and hit the steam table hard. Play hide the tacos. One block north of the grocery store, San Francisco. Say hi to Victor.

adios don O

My vote goes to a great taco place in mid town called El Pique. Mmmm Pastor!

For tacos pastor, we ventured to Los Serras. Thingly sliced charred pork, sprinkled with onions and cilantro, and topped with a thin wafer of pineapple. And for 5 pesos each, I don't know why you'd want to eat anywhere else.

A couple can easily spend $50.00 to $70.00 dollars or more but well worth it!

Also, would some of you put in an address or directions to these hidden gems if you can remember how to find them, especially La Mission. You've said that there were three of them.

I know I'm fairly alone in my views, but when I go someplace I like to eat local cuisine. I have a great Italian section here in STL and I can't imagine going to eat Italian in Mexico. I have tried Prima because we once went with another couple who insisted. No beter than any of a dozen restraunts I can get in any city in the US.

As far as favorites being expensive, nothing could be further from the truth. My #1 favorite, CD, costs $5-$10 for an entree.

Primas is one of my favorite places, but it is not cheap. They make their own pasta and the seafood is VERY fresh. I also think the grilled lobster is the best on the island. Dinner for two with drinks will break 50 bucks if you're hungry.

My recommendation for a cheap but good place is LaMission, not the one by the square and not the one near the airport. There is a third LaMission on 30th. if you can get the cabbie to take you there. It is where the locals go. I had filet of grouper, baked potato, steamed veggies, flour tortillas, refried black beans and guacamole for 60 pesos and it was VERY good. My wife had the " Big Boy Gringo Mexican Platter " which was loaded with enchiladas, rellenos, tacos you name it and couldn't eat it all for 70 pesos. I highly recommend this place. I'll be there in a couple of weeks.
