I use locking biners if I'm going to use them -- these aren't prone to the same problems because you must unlock them to engage the hinge.

Be careful with those, they have a tendency to get corroded and seize up. Don't want to leave one clipped to your gear for a day or two before you wash everything, then you can't get the stupid thing off.
 
Use a lightweight wiregate climbing biner with a stainless gate. No springs or pins to rust. But yeah, be careful you dont get clipped up on something and have soemthing bad happen...
 
I have a Home Depot recommendation for this post. They sell these plastic orange electrical cord holders. I'm probably not explaining this well. Let's see, it's various sizes of 1 in to 3 in diameter. When closed it is round and closes by pushing against the side. There is a small latch to open it with. The cost is less than $4 and if you snag on something, it's light weight plastic, it will snap apart. I use it to keep my guages in place.
