urchin damage is cyclical also... they eat until they run out of food in that area, then die. Then the kelp comes back, fish come back, and the cycle begins again.

Even the front side of Anacapa is slim pickin' with the kelps. We were at Goldfish Bowl yesterday and there was no giant kelp at all.
