They are assuming no traffic. If you leave Long Beach at 9:00 pm that is probably realistic. If you leave at 3:00 pm, it could easily be double that.

Aanacapa and Santa Cruz have great diving and I love the boats out of Ventura, but if you only have three days you might not want to spoil your trip with a tough haul on the 101 freeway when you don't know your way around. I've made basically that drive in 90 minutes - at 6 AM on a Sunday morning.

You could have fun on Catalina the whole time or come back to the mainland for one more day of diving (beach or boat). I'm not saying Ventura is bad - its great - but you may not have the time and transportation to do both Catalina and Ventura.

Yes, looks like it might be a stretch. I will probably stay in Catalina for the whole period, then and do the northern Channel Islands another time.

Out of curiosity, what do you mean by "the mainland"? Diving out of Long Beach? What are the choices there? I was under the impression that the vis off the mainland isn't so great. Or are you saying that there are boats out of Long Beach or thereabouts that will take me to Anacapa etc.? Are there any out of Catalina that will do the same?

There are boats in mainland harbors (California itself, not an island) that will take you to any of the above locations... northern channel islands (anacapa, santa cruz, etc.) or the southern channel islands (santa catalina, santa barbara, etc.). The boats based in Avalon, the harbor on Catalina, pretty much exclusively stick to the island (or perhaps on occasion the other southern islands).

Ok. So what in your opinion would be the best way to get to a boat that goes to Santa Barbara Island from Catalina i.e. via which mainland harbor?

Something like the Great Escape out of Long Beach?

If you're staying on Catalina, you'd have to check with both boats to see if they have any trips planned to head out there. It's not a regular run, I'm fairly certain, but others might know better.

If you're staying on the mainland, there are lots of boats that go out every day, but few fixed daily runs to Santa Barbara Island. Most play the destination by ear depending on conditions, unless they have a specific charter, although they'll post a general game plan that always depends on conditions. Again, you'd need to chase down schedules on individual boats and find one going out to SBI on the days you're interested in.

Check this site:

...for a list of local boats. Most post their schedules on their websites. Find one going to SBI and leaving from a location you're happy with, and you should be all set. Sounds like you could look at boats leaving from Long Beach, San Pedro, or Redondo, at a guess.
