Next week I expect to get my Apeks atx50 and atx40. Also I'll have a 5' long hose by then. Is changing hoses on this regulator pretty simple and something I can do myself or do I need my lds technician to do it?

easier and cleaner than changing the spark plugs in your car it still might be beyond some folk.

You need an appropriately sized open end wrench(s) or good quality adjustable wrench(s). Do not over tighten... just snug down... the o-ring provides the seal... be sure to use two wrenchs on the second stage to keep from unscrewing the valve body or tightening it down and breaking the housing.

If none of that makes sense and you are still  then go to your LDS. :D

I wouldn't consider myself very handy, but I have managed to replace several water faucets, disconnect/reconnect a dishwasher and replace piping with flexible hoses. Oh yeah, and nothing leaks .... anymore. :D

I actually understand what you're saying, which by the way, is a scary thought.

The whole reason this question came up is that I saw some veiled references in several posts about having to have some extra knowledge when swapping hoses. If it's simply a matter of taking off one hose and connecting another then I think I can handle it.

My current plan is to use the 3/8" 5' hose for my primary reg and use the 1/2" hose for the backup reg. I liked that option more than flipping the first stage upside down.

Thanks for your help, UP. By the way, how do I get my name on the waiting list to dive with UP?

I always recommend the trained professional. This is an easy task and your DS should do it for no charge perhaps while you wait.
If there is a problem found during this opperation (Bad o-ring or lost O-ring) what ever... it is not a problem then. Most would be happy to do it... I think
