I just finished my cert dives 2 weekends ago....My instuctor made it a very easy going experience. As someone else said, your first dive is just that... a dive, to get used to being underwater and get rid of the freak out factor of being in deep(ish) water. Just use it to calm down and get your buoyancy under control.

on the second third and fourth, we did a few skills first, then just did more diving It's nothing that you didn't do in the pool, except you're in open water (where you'll probably be doing most of your regular everyday sport diving, unless you gotta big bath tub)

If you're PADI, just look at the end of module 3 and module 5 (I think) and they list the skills you will be asked to demonstrate. The only thing that I didn't do prior to my weekend was the navigation, but we went over that in the alley behind the dive shop (me with a towel over my head and a compass wandering up and down the alley...the neighbors must have thought I was nuts! hahaha!)

You'll be fine!

Sometimes going from one instructor to the other the skills will vary slightly in the way they are done but as long as they are done safely it should be fine.

I agree with ChrisA, don't look at it as a test. It is just a way for you to get a feel of open water and demonstrate to the instructor that you learned your lessons. Even if you mess one up early it isn't a horrible thing, you have plenty of time to get it right.

thanks all who responded...................................................orry

Hiya everyone btw, just registering tonight.

Oddly enough, I'll be doing my first open water dives in the Puget Sound in the Seattle area this weekend as well. I'm excited for it, but also a little nervous as a new diver. By the end of this weekend I sould be PADI basic certified and will be going on a diving excursion in the Great Barrier Reef in November during my vacation. I'm quite looking forward to it.

I'm also looking forward to getting used to these boards and to getting plugged into this community.

Hopefully you will have a chance to do lots of local diving before your trip.
It takes a few dives after certification to get things like bouency and air
consumption under control. That OW cert card is really a learner's permit,
Do your first few dives close to home

I can definitely see myself diving quite a bit in the next weeks, months, and years!

The next step now, will be to get the advanced OW certificate!
