A few notes:

The only Moderator in the Feedback forum is me. Nobody else. Unless someone here really becomes an obnoxious PITA, I will not interfere.

SB runs on vBulletin software. Most functionality you see here is part of the software. Some changes can be implemented in a matter of minutes by setting the right parameters, others require extensive coding.

They didn't provide the level of moderation & type of forums you want. Just because you want it, why should the focus of the people who run this board be wasted on it.

See, I can use bold and be aggressive towards other people too. Aren't I clever?

This place is for giving feedback, that's what I did. Just because you I disagree with you shouldn't provoke you to make it personal. I know feel well it is my opinion, others can clearly see who posted it and I made no attempt to represent any other people. Why do you feel the need to point out it's my opinion?

This is exactly the reason why free-for-all discussion forums quickly descend into anarchy. People playing the man and not the ball......

Perhaps you should re-read the last several posts responded to and my answer to them and you might notice that it's nothing personal against you.

Secondly, I used the bold for emphasis, not aggression. The snippy "Aren't I clever" comments is exactly the type of thing that degrades many of these conversations into personal attacks rather than a discussion of the topic, IMO.

My response was based on the comment that any forum that isn't diving related is a waste of time to moderate. Since the owner/mods of the board have chosen to include that, it seems reasonable they have already committed to the time necessary to moderate it.

I was quoted in a manner that suggests I was being asked my opinion on the moderation. I responded with a few thoughts that I thought might be considered. I'm not going to jump up and down and yell if they don't.

For the most part, I don't have any major issues with the moderation on the board. However occasionally there are exceptions.

Recently NetDoc and I had a private disagreement about something. I deferred to his wishes because, well, because it's his board. In the process we came to an understanding that would not have been possible if I had chosen to ignore, or take it public and rant and rave about it.

BTW, you still didnt answer the question I asked...

OK, if it's not "anything goes", what would the new boundaries need to be?

For those people that have never been in the Surface Interval and/or the MOF come take a look before you judge. Like it says at the top of the Surface Interval page:

Surface Interval Welcome to the Surface Interval, where divers are free to chat about anything within the TOS and feel free to let the conversation drift from topic to topic, much the same as chatting aboard the dive boat in between dives. While the rules here are a little more relaxed than in the regular forums, we do ask that you keep the conversations "workplace friendly", and to keep in mind that we have people from different countries, cultures and temperaments here. Thank you.

We are not asking that it be anything that goes. We do not want it to become an internet sex chat room. I do not think that would be appropriate. What we would like to see is a slight loosening of the restrictions since it is an 18 and over Opt-In forum.

Yes there has been a Hot Chick Friday (or 2 ;)) where pictures of women in bikinis have been posted. The reason this started was to point out a perceived (and I feel real) double standard when it came to things like this. Women that posted pictures of men in speedos had no problem doing so. When a bicture of a woman in a bikini was posted it was removed.

Since then Hot Chick Friday (HCF) has been kept alive to keep the conversation on the subject of censorship, and equality, going. I believe that had there not been such actions as the deleting of post, and the shutting down of the MOF for a weekend, HCF would have fizzled out. Then again maybe it would not have, but we keep it alive because of the resistance.

The MOF is a tight knit group. From time to time members leave the MOF, and new ones come in. We talk about a lot of topics that are not diving. But, you might be suprised by how much we do talk about our diving in the thread.

We are a family. We give each other crap from time to time. I have dyslexia. I am constatly mis-spelling things. I get crap for it, but it does not bother me. When one of us is in need the rest of us rally together. We console each other through the worst of problems. We give each other grief if someone hasn't been diving recently. When MOF people travel they there are always offers from other MOF members to stay with them if they are from that area. We also go diving together.

This is the largest on line diving community. It is made up of people from all different walks of life and cultures. So is the MOF. I have worked as a divemaster since 1980. I have always said that diving brings together people that normally wouldn't give each other the time of day otherwise. SB and the MOF do the exact same thing. It gives us a common bond. Diving.

However, we can not talk diving 24/7. That is where the Surface Interval comes in on SB. Just like we can't stay underwater all the time. We have to do surface intervals in between dives to off gas. The Surface Interval, and the MOF, are our way of "off gassing".

These forums already exist. They are 18 and over, and they require you to Opt-In. If you are not interested in going into the Surface Interval to talk about "non-diving" topics then don't go in. But to think that these discussions will not take place with or without you, is like asking that all conversations on a dive boat must be diving related. If that were the case then it would quickly be a quiet, and boring boat ride.

My Opinion is….

Keep the diving forums moderated. I think limiting language, sexual innuendos, and personal attacks are good practices. Overall, it is good business etiquette and makes the board reputable. It is better to err on the side of caution and you can’t make everyone happy.

I also agree with the requirement of being 18 yrs old on the SI and having to opt-in to partake in the fun. It protects SB. If there was no requirement, SB could be held liable for polluting the pristine minds of our American teenage youth. Now, if an underage youth chooses to opt-in and lie about their age…so be it. Unfortunately, in today’s society, we cannot trust some parents to take responsibility for their children’s actions. The board should not be held liable for what parents should be doing with their kids.

Let people do and say what they want in an extra special Wild West opt-in forum with some log-in function. Let people use curse words, debate religion and politics, let there be chicks in bikinis, as a girl…I do not prefer to oogle at men in banana hammocks but if someone wants to post them, I will be happy to point and laugh. I can choose not go to that area of the board if I don’t like it.

Also, let newbies ask whatever question they want. Wait…let anyone ask any question they want. If you don’t want to answer the same old question, don’t answer it. Just like if someone doesn’t want to participate in the extra special forum, don’t go in there.

In summary, I believe we should moderate (censor) the diving forums and liberally moderate the SI. So, isn’t that what is being currently done? What was the issue again? Was anybody debating if SI should exist? Now I feel lost.

Does my opinion count since I am not a supporting member?

For how this poor thread has derailed into personal attacks/insults, name calling, porn, talk about whether one should wear underwear or good grief, be nekkid WHEN posting, women in bikinis, finger pointing and overall bedlam, I would like to submit this thread for consideration into the 2008 Soap Opera Digest Awards. I honestly don't think Susan Lucci herself could produce more drama.

Maybe SB might win a pretty award.

P.S. I am just poking a bit of fun.

P.S. I am just poking a bit of fun. I do think there are some very valid points being made in between the mayhem.

On behalf of my fellow "Drama Queens", we are a really tight knit group, I would like to thank . . . :rofl3:
