Hey, put back my post, it was relevant? (insert I don't care smiley here)

If this is indeed an international discussion board, which it appears to be based on the number of members outside the US, why should we and they be subject to the ridiculousness of political correctness that is turning people into thin-skinned whining cry babies? Not to mention putting alot of good joke writers out of work. There will always be racial, ethnic, religious, gender, sexual, etc, jokes, innuendos, stories and the like. Many of them work place friendly. At least where I work they are. Americans are also subject to double standards. Just today in Annie's mailbox in my local paper someone wrote in about an incident where a korean person accused people in the posters native land of eating reindeer. So what? When the poster responded that the korean's people eat dogs he got nasty, swore at them, and has not spoken to them since. Point being if you can dish it out be ready to take it. This is what we are coming to. Harmless remarks about people we are not or don't even know are grounds for lawsuits, anger, and fights even. C'mon people they are just words. Maybe somebody on here will decide that they are being bullied, be too stupid to not read those posts they feel are aimed at them, turn off the computer, or just ignore it, and eat a bullet. Then when the goofballs family wants to prosecute the "bully" it will waste time, money, resources that could be used against real criminals and the board will shut down or be moderated to the point that every post will be censored and reviewed before it gets aired.

Opt in forums are like satellite radio to me. Don't like what's being said? Don't listen. Language a little rough? Go to any middle school- you'll hear stuff that you got to go home and look up and when you see what they are saying you'll wonder why they are allowed to be around civilized people. As to workplace friendly language- it depends on where you work. What is ok in a factory is not what's ok in an office full of suits. It should be but again we are a nation of double standards. Listen to rap music and tell me if certain words are offensive why are the big 4 or 5 used for every other word. If they are truly offensive no one would use them and especially make money off of them. And why can Eddie Murphy use words and get paid big bucks and get big laughs but if I use those same terms Reverend Al and his like will want me strung up? Double standards people. It will result in the self destruction of society.

I like it!!!!!! This is true. That's where "Generation ME" with their self-esteem issues comes in, these people can't handle jokes that is directed to them, with respect to appearance, race etc. One just committed suicide on MySpace?

ok, kim's post and the one of fev's that he quotes are the perfect examples. i read fev's last sentence as joking, complete with smilie, and kim reads it as a bit serious.

random thoughts - i agree that the board leans right. i agree that as you know people more thoroughly and can read them better, even online, that jokes are more often taken as intended and even corrections or disagreements (though they might look like an observer to be harsh) from others aren't offensive *because you know each other*. that sense of community is the key, and what jep is talking about.

i was one of the original mof/nmof, and they were some of the most supportive in jameson's bad times even though i wasn't on a lot any more. the community on this board means a great deal to me.

I think you are missing the point here. I attempted to write down how I believe the board is, at least to many, as things stand now. If you read back to my other posts you'll see that I also have no problem with the loosening that is being requested. I don't by any means think that all Christian and/or Right leaning people are automatically intolerant. I also don't think that intolerant tyranny as you put it is the exclusive territory of those view points. There's plenty of intolerant Left leaning folk as well.

Whether the board is loosened up or not, I do think that issues of fairness and balance also need to be addressed.

Sorry, I was not imlying that you thought Christians were intollerant. It was an attempt at a little humor on this discussion. My wife keeps telling me I'm not as funny as I think I am.

Wow!

The board appears to be leftie oriented to me!

Example: On the KUDOs thread, I started 2 threads giving kudos to conservative female talk show hosts. Both had written #1 NYT best sellers.

Both were summarily deleted.

Imagine that!

:coffee:

are you high?

(never mind, that's a rhetorical question)

this Board as a whole is just slightly to the right of Ghengis Khan and almost as far right as Mussolini ... probably one of the few remaining places in the world were denying global warming won't get you laughed out of town

(on a good day)

:blinking:

I think its fairly easy to moderate if you are only moderating personal attacks/threats. Report the personal attack and its dealt with.

It is the other kinds of moderation where the grey line is drawn as to what is ok or whats not. Even office friendly doesnt cover it..depends on the office, the job etc.

Office friendly to a bunch of construction workers is not the same as the office at PITA.

I think a personal attack is obvious and such offenses would be easy to deal with. Also easy would be removing that member from that section of the board...or is it bored??

I tend to think of myself as pretty liberal, which has earned me holidays before.

That said, the following is an excerpt from a PM I sent to another SB member awhile back.

I’m thinking about starting a thread with a poll, to ask whether there is sufficient backing to look at revising the TOS or – at the least – creating a “TOS lite” opt-in area where graphic nudity, genuinely sexual images and profanity remain off-limits, but where the rules are a bit more relaxed.

As an opt-in area, obviously, if you think you might be offended, no need to join; if you think it might be a bit of a laugh, then come on in.

I reckon that if it was offered as an opt-in sub-forum, we’d have more people interested than not and it would go a long way to redressing the allegations of SB being too repressive and prudish. It doesn’t help that the mods have different standards e.g.

Larry: - Mr. Mod, is this gif of bonking safes OK?

Mr. Mod: - Should be, Larry. I’ll check.

Senior Mod (by PM): - Post a pic like that again Larry, and you’re permanently banned.

I don't mean to stamp on toes, but this seems to go part-way to what Jepuskar is suggesting.

Any thoughts?
