If the port is closed, or the weather is bad, the cenotes are a great alternative.
Download a wind app before your trip and plan based on the forecast,
That could make the ferry ride an adventure. Not recommended for those with motion sickness or if you can't handle people throwing up near you.

Yes they definitely worth it. We have stayed on the mainland 8 times and have I never done one ocean dive. You can dive pretty reefs almost anywhere but there is only one place cenotes.

Since then, I have just been enjoying Cozumel reefs so much that I haven’t taken the time to go back.
In some ways it’s been the opposite for me. I used to dive in Cozumel a couple of times each year, but once I got going in the cenotes eventually I took cave classes and for the last ten years I haven’t been back to Cozumel, instead diving caves on the mainland 2-3 times/year. I keep meaning to take a quick trip over to do some reef diving on one of my cave trips, but I’m loving the caves so much I don’t want to miss a day.

You know, I can totally see that. I ended up going the other way, but it’s just a question of what interests you the most. Glad to hear you’ve been enjoying it.
