My Wife and I will be traveling to Puerto Morelos at the end of October. We are very interested in spending one day on a Cenote dive. We have done lots of dives all over the Caribbean, but we have never done any kind of cave diving. We were in Cancun last year and we saw a brochure about cenotes and we decided the next time we came down we would go. So we are heading down in October it is not really a dive trip, but we are going to take one day to experience a Cenote. We are not really sure what is the best Cenote to dive and what shop is really the best/safest dive shop to use.

Thanks!

There are quite a few tourist cenotes, and they are all different. Cenote Eden has beautiful views out into Cenote Corral; Taj Maha has great halocline effects. Dos Ojos is very "cave-like" (I was pretty sure, when I did the tour, that we didn't stay within the definition of cavern, even though we followed the line) and Grand has huge, stately decorations. A lot of people like Chac Mool's huge room, and Chikin Ha has enormous boulders. I think you will have a wonderful time in any of them.

Make sure, when you book your tours, that your operator follows the APSA guidelines. Your guide should be Full Cave and at least an OW instructor, and should dive in full cave gear. No more than four divers to a guide, and everyone should have lights. Do NOT follow a guide beyond the gold cavern line.

Hey Pirate,

i just got back from Cenote Eden and Tajma Ha which is a great combination for stalagmites , halocline and sunlight effrects.
We are flexible you tell us what you like to see and i will tell you what is possble for your experience level and the local weather condition. We have 22 different Cavern dive options from easy to very difficult and i promise they are adictive !!!

I vote for Beyond Diving...small operation so you get personal service. I had a blast diving with them in April.

My suggestion would be Dos Ojos, Chac Mool or Ponderosa. There no "best" cenote, all are amazing, but for a first time dive in Cenotes you want to enjoy lightful cenotes (at least on your first dive) in order to get use to the cavern environment. You will find that in Kukulkan (first dive in Chac Mool), barbie line (Dos ojos first dive) or Ponderosa.
I agree 100% about choosing qualified guides not only for your safety but getting the most of your first cenote dive. You will love it.

I went with Coconut Divers in May and my newly certified diver girlfriend came along. Leif is fully compliant with APSA guidelines, and they will provide you with the required lights, which are more than sufficient. She absolutely loved the dives, and was thrilled with Leif, he is both quite humorous and a very compentent full cave diver/guide. He will give you a very detailed site briefing, and do everything to ensure a safe and exciting trip. He has been diving caves in this area for over 10 years (I actually dove with him as a guide in a cenote in 2002!) Their prices are extremely fair and all inclusive. If you'd like to see video footage of any of the cenotes there, please PM me and I can send you what I have, which is over 6 hours of HD footage all with Leif in some of the most beautiful cenotes around!

I was in Cozumel in January and went diving with La Tortuga Azul, it has a small operation and is very personal since they manage only small groups and you can customize your trip, they also offer cenote diving.

If you need any more information feel free to PM.
