Xpu Ha Beach is around 20 minutes south of Playa Del Carmen and is a beautiful beach away from "the zoo" and is much less touristy than akumal, playa del carmen and puerto aventuras with cenotes on your doorstep! Villas del caribe is a small private hotel on the beach and not as expensive as the all inclusives. There is a great dive shop, Bahia Divers 2 minutes walk along the beach...ask for Stefano Pedroni. www.bahiadivers.com. He is a fantastic cenote guide and does ocean dives from the beach and prices are great. Nothing but great experiences.

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

Now you got me thinking about flying into Cozumel instead of Cancun. I would prefer Coz because as you point out the ocean is better but was wondering if getting to the cenotes takes about the same time (by ferry, I assume) and if it can be done as a 1 day trip?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sy
Cenotes can be done from Cozumel but it makes for a very long day. If your main interest is cenotes, I would stay in PDC, Akumal, or Tulum. If you stay in PDC, check out Klaus Bosbach at Playa Scuba Dive Center | Tauchbasis | Centro de Buceo > Playa del Carmen, México. He has been diving and mapping the cenotes for 30+ years. Great guy, cenote dive instructor & he'll make sure you dive safely. Don't miss Dos Ojos or Taj Mahal, both are incredible cenotes! His Facebook page, Facebook, has some incredible cenote pics also. Have a great time!

Very true. Forgot about Xpu Ha. I did some cenote/reef diving with those guys several years ago, very good!

I just received the current edition of "Moon Handbooks-Yucatan Peninsula" and it made it sound as if Tulum had become a major tourist zoo. I know Cancun is.

I'm glad you say otherwise.

I would too. I'd say the entire hospitality industry in Tulum is smaller than just one of the mega resorts in Cancun.

Tulum is no where near as developed as Cancun, or Cozumel. Not even close.

When we visit the Yucatan for cave diving, we stay in Puerto Aventuras. It is ~1hr15min from Cancun (South of Playa del Carmen, north of Akumal and Tulum.) There are a couple of cenotes north of PA but the popular ones start just South of PA and continue down through Tulum. Puerto Aventuras is a fairly safe little community, with a nice "base" for activities from PDC to Muyil. PA, PDC, Akumal or Tulum will all be much closer to the cenotes than Cozumel. If your focus will be cenotes, or other mainland activities, it just makes sense to stay on the mainland.

Oh, man. I go to Tulum every year. It has nothing in common with Cancun besides being in the same part of the world. Your guidebook is severely misleading you. The town is relatively tourist free and the beach area isn't even on the power grid yet.
