Would appreciate learning about some hotels and dive shops within reach of Cenote diving.

I understand that you can go to Tulum from Cancun airport by car but that both those cities are zoos. Any less "touristy" locations that have good hotels and dive shops?

Thanks,

Sy

Tulum is a zoo? Maybe if you live in a very, very rural area. I don't think you can really call Tulum a city.

You could stay anywhere from Playa del Carmen to Tulum and have no problem arranging cenote dives. This area has everything from mega resort all-inclusives to no electicity palapas and just about everything in between. It's just a matter of what you want and what you want to pay.

I just received the current edition of "Moon Handbooks-Yucatan Peninsula" and it made it sound as if Tulum had become a major tourist zoo. I know Cancun is.

I'm glad you say otherwise. Can you recommend a good cenote diving location and mid-range ($75-$100 per day) ?

Thanks,

Sy

Fernando at Dive Tulum - located at the beach in Tulum, or Robbie at Xibalba (in town near the 307/Coba road intersection)

(gratuitous dive tulum photo below, the poster on right was made from one of my photos)

Hi Sy,

We like to stay in Akumal while we are down there. It's quiet and has a nice slow pace, along with being centrally located. PDC is nice if you're into partying all night.

For Cenote diving, I highly recommend you contact Dennis Weeks at Diablo Diving. Dennis runs a first class operation and frequently posts on this board as Pez Diablo.

We just returned from Akumal. There are some Cavern Photos posted on my web site as well as some Cave Diving Photos.

Have a great trip!

Hi .

Your photos are absolutely awesome! What kind of camera did you use?

How far by car from the Cancun Airport is Akumal? I assume it makes more sense to fly into Cancun than Cozumel.

Thanks for all the very useful info.

Sy

Thanks Sy,

The camera is a Nikon D100 in a L&M Titan housing. The cave photos were my first attempt at actually taking pictures inside the caves and I was pleased with the results.

From the Cancun airport to Akumal is about 90 minutes or so, south on highway 307. Daniel's link to Locogringo is a very good resource for information on transportation and lodging in the area. If I were flying into Cozumel, I'd most likely just stay over there as the Ocean diving is much better in Coz.

The cenotes start just south of Puerto Aventuras and continue south past Tulum as well as East along the road to Coba.

Have a great trip!

Hi,

Thanks for the info.

Now you got me thinking about flying into Cozumel instead of Cancun. I would prefer Coz because as you point out the ocean is better but was wondering if getting to the cenotes takes about the same time (by ferry, I assume) and if it can be done as a 1 day trip?

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Sy
